ReplyDebra, there is no need to apologize. I am always grateful when readers take the time to respond to my writing, and their reactions belong to them.....good or bad. I appreciate your comments and in no way felt you "offended my writing". I understand folks will like what I do....or they won't. Typos are unfortunate things along with grammatical errors that happen when I hurry things along for various reasons. I accept full ownership regarding that....:)
Yes!!! I hope by mentioning the anniversary of the crash and a few details readers are encouraged to dig for more of the story.

I mainly research and write about historical topics in Douglas County. I wrote this piece as a glimpse of events that day mainly from a Douglas County point of view. In no way did I do this to make those who assisted look more important than those who responded from Paulding or any other county. Of course, Paulding County bore the brunt of the tragedy from beginning to end.
Rather than get into a lengthy conversation over what I did right or wrong I would prefer to focus on the magnitude of the story, inform those new to the area who didn’t know about the plane crash, and stop and think about those poor souls who lost their lives, were injured, or were forever changed by the day’s events. -

ReplyWilliam, thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I feel a little honored since it appears this was your first effort to take the time to respond to something here at Patch. The Patch concept centers on getting the community to respond and comment – to become part of the process. It appears the goal was met in this case.
William, I’m not a journalist. I don’t pretend to be. I also realize that I’m not going to please every reader every time, and clearly in this instance I didn’t please you.
It is never my intention to submit something for publication that contains glaring errors. Mistakes do happen in the process, and if I’ve offended you enough to comment, that certainly was not my goal.Debra….I also thank you for your comment, and I agree with you regarding the scope and magnitude of the New Hope tragedy. It was huge with many, many people involved. There is no way to cover all of it in one piece. I could tell when I brought the subject up to a few people it was still very fresh in their memories, and they really didn’t want to relive those times. This is just one of the reasons why I stuck with delving into the historical record only without conducting new interviews. I certainly don’t apologize for using published sources – especially first-hand accounts – to support my writing.

ReplyI left a comment on the FB link for this story, but wanted to interject here that a new recorder isn't that expensive. I have a great one I purchased at Walmart for $30. It records great, and I can download the audio files onto my laptop. Gee, the BOE could enter the 21st Century and actually upload the files to the Internet where citizens could access them. No more worry with those pesky cassette tapes. It just seems to me that at the very least the BOE would recognize the importance of a record of the events for themselves.

ReplyI've never wanted to take an ocean cruise. Vacationing with four to five thousand folks is NOT my idea of a vacation, and there are too many things that go wrong. If I was ever going to take any type of trip by ship or boat, it would be a Viking River Cruise or something smaller and more intimate. I've never heard of any of their passengers being held captive for days while the company decides how to handle the situation.

ReplyRadiodave....thank you so much commenting as you were "passin' through". I do agree with you that many locals, no matter how long they have lived here, don't seem to care about their local history, but that hasn't stopped me from researching and writing about Douglas County history for the last two years here at Patch and at my own blog.
You seem like a fairly "with it" guy being on the Internet and all, so I'm sure you can appreciate the history of a county.....of a city.....can't be completely covered in one "little old post". The Douglas County story is too vast to cover with just a few postings or words. After two years I haven't even scratched the surface.
That being said.....perhaps the following link might satisfy your need to make sure I know the history of how the county was formed:
http://douglasville.patch.com/articles/our-history-how-douglas-lost-an-s
and regarding how Skint Chestnut became Douglasville and was born out of a lawsuit that went all the way to the Georgia Supreme Court you can try this link:

Thanks for taking time to stop and read Patch while on your "Florida trek."

ReplyI've been told by a couple of folks involved with the downtown museum that a full time curator is key for obtaining accreditation....a process that is necessary for the ability to receive traveling exhibits that would also help to gain "outside" traffic for the museum. However, in all of the news that I'm reading about hiring a curator I don't hear any of this. I hope accreditation is still a goal, and not just a push for the Hydrangea Festival.

Jeff, I've never seen one. Perhaps I need to put the word out on the FB page for Douglas County history. Maybe someone has one somewhere......
