We recycle newspaper and all cardboard products including paper towel and toilet tissue rollers, any boxes brought from the grocery/drug store such as toothpaste, cereal etc. These are taken weekly to the recycle bin. All tin/aluminum cans by washing and placing in covered trash cans which have a designated area and are recycled monthly. This has reduced our garbage pick-up in half. We do not use our garbage service recycle program as they haul their refuse out of the county to someone's landfill. Any excess materials are carried to our landfill for proper disposal. Many are unaware that the recycle program began at the Douglas County Landfill in the late 70's. This is not something new but does require constant reminders, such as how many years paper, plastic, styrofoam and glass take to degenerate in our landfills. Proper disposal of batteries, oil products, roofing. tires and even large appliances should also be included in the recycle process education which should begin with grammar school children!

I have been a resident of Douglas County for almost forty years and have seen the shelter grow from a one room shack on county road department property to what through the great endless efforts of Mae West as Director wih many struggles. I have contacted the Board of Commissioners with my concerns as well with some action taken. The most effective was the hiring of a company to evaluate the situation and make recommendations. What happened to those?
The dismissal of Mr. Pyrdum because of his great concerns was perhaps the worse thing to do. This whole committee should have been dismissed due to their recommendations of a person with such a horrible "kill" rate in his Resume'. Perhaps the best choice would have been to hire someone with great knowledge of shelters, ordinances and State laws pertaining to same. Instead they allow a person with eighteen years experience with the shelter to be dismissed!
In her capacity as Director, Mae West developed the most effective Ordinance for Animal Control that was respected by other counties and even other states, calling for a copy of same to implement into their own counties or state due to our ordinance having such a great success within the court system.
A question I have is who made the decision to discontinue the Southern Hope Humane Society's Mae West Fix' Em program? It would seem the citizens are once again getting more "lip" service to appease than actually taking proper action.

While many would like to forget the history of our country, that should never happen. Mr. Sherfield's painting should not have been removed for the voice of a few who might have been offended. The portrayal of a beheading of African Americanis is the portrayal of injustice, not that anyone was actually beheaded. Women too fought for these rights. Apparently many art pieces were reviewed by a committee which is given the responsibility of choosing art for display in the airport. Apparently these were very astute people to see the importance of this portrayal.
I feel no part of our American History should be suppressed, even to the flags. One might not agree with everything in our history but should respect it and the opinions of others. All American History should be taught in our public schools, and not limited to what is politically correct. We do have freedom of speech, thus far anyway.

I agree! Dee is right you can order online and avoid the traffic and crowds. I too think it takes away from the spirit of Thanksgiving. Some put the Christmas tree up after a big Thanksgiving dinner and enjoying watching family placing special ornaments on the tree. Really giving meaning to both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Too many have forgotten the true meaning of both.

Yes, it was Jessica and still is as far as the long time residents of the County is concerned. Many wish he could be resureceted, but since only "the one" was we must trust in "him" to carry us through our tough times with the now Sheriff and deputies he has provided to carry on your PawPaw's work giving them the strength and courage.

Let's not forget Earl Lee also started the first In-mate roadside clean up program, with a converted school bus to transport non-violent in-mates to and from road clean-up of litter. This program as grown over the years and now includes State Prisoners, something every resident, new and old can see the benefits of daily. Much credit goes to Sheriff Miller for continuing this program.
Many counties within the state immediately followed with this program, but it was started with Douglas County Superior Court Judge James and lower court judges initiating it with "Community Service Workers" added to their sentences. Soon every county was doing this!

I totally agree! These fine establishments have been in business of many years and we have seen new Barbecue places come and go in the last five or so years, some not lasting even a year, all I believe selling alcohol. It makes me very uncomfortable to be greeted at a restaurant and being directed to the bar area, even though our thirteen old grandson may be accompanying us. Children should not be allowed in the bar area even if just having a meal!
That should not happen in a family oriented establishment, of which there are many now in Douglas.

It has taken eight years to try to re-vamp our county in directions other than building homes that have put many developers/contractors under, too many housing developments approved and advertised through out the North to come to Douglas County and take advantage of low interest loans. Under who's watch did that happen?
That is what has caused most of the problems in the county. Twelve years of that was enough.
Note too, much more has/is being done for the Animal Shelter than in those twelve years, no matter the excuses.
I wonder too, why Ms. Jackson-Jones isn't responding to anything. I too would like to hear her response on many issues. This could have been done through the Forum's held and not on this site.
Frankly I'm tired of all the mud-slinging and robo-calls of so many candidates in this election and my vote is going to be for those not doing the slinging.
