Retail and package liquor stores within the Douglasville City limits can begin selling alcohol at 12:30 p.m. today, but not all will. According to Douglasville & Douglas County for Sunday alcohol sales, the following is a list of retailers in the city of Douglasville that can start selling alcohol on Sundays starting Nov. 25: All eight package liquor stores are in the city and have the option to open on Sundays, but not all will. Out of the 74,210 registered voters in Douglas County, 54,358 voted for or against Sunday Sales, while 55,201 voted in the Presidential race. Here is what they voted on in descending order of number of total votes, for all of the races that were on all ballots countywide, excluding unopposed offices. Package and convenient stores in Douglasville will be able to sell alcohol on Sunday, Nov. 25, thanks to an overwhelming show of support at the polls Tuesday. City voters passed the law with 2,429 votes, or 70 percent, to 1,060 votes against, or 30 percent. When the City voted to put it on the ballot they also voted on the revised ordinance, setting an effective date of Nov. 21, a Wednesday. The County, however, only voted to put it on the ballot and have not yet voted on the effective date. The next scheduled voting meeting of the County Commission is Nov. 20, so it could be as early as Nov. 25. Douglas County Elections Supervisor Laurie Fulton said 45 percent of the county's active voters have already voted. That number is down from four years ago when 54 percent early voted.
Douglas County Elections Supervisor Laurie Fulton said 45 percent of the county's active voters have already voted. That number is down from four years ago when 54 percent early voted. However, four years ago voters had six weeks to early vote and this year they only had three weeks plus one Saturday. Alice Shapiro was in line at about 10 a.m. at Bill Arp Elementary and only waited 10 minutes. She voted for Sunday Sales and said, "Everybody should go have a drink!" Nycole Jarrett and son Owen, 6, just voted at the Old Douglas County Courthouse. Owen said they voted for Barrack Obama. "Both candidates are good but Barrack is closer to our beliefs," said Nycole. The case for and against Sunday alcohol sales was made during a political forum hosted by the Junior League of Douglas County and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women on Tuesday night at the Downtown Conference Center.

Richard Segal, chairman Yes for Douglas County, made the case for Sunday Sales (video attached). The YesforDouglasCounty.com website was created to encourage residents to vote yes on Nov. 6 to Sunday alcohol sales in order to keep dollars in Douglas.
YesforDouglasCounty.com is a website, launched Aug. 26, urging Douglas County and Douglasville residents to vote yes on Sunday alcohol sales, both at retail spots and in restaurants, in the upcoming election on Nov. 6. The purpose? To keep dollars in Douglas County. "Some people have said that Sunday sales will lead to increased availability of alcohol, but it's already all around us," Richard Segal said, chairman and organizer of the "Yes" campaign. "Cobb, Fulton, Villa Rica and Hiram have already passed Sunday sales. The Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 today to allow two alcohol-related issues on the Nov. 6 ballot for a vote by Douglas County citizens.
As expected, Douglas County Commissioner Ann Jones-Guider was the only dissenting vote in a 4-1 decision to allow Sunday sales and by-the-drink measures on the Nov. 6 ballot. The Commissioners made the vote during their 10 a.m. meeting today. In the attached videos, each Commissioner gives his or her reasoning for their vote. The Douglasville City Council voted unanimously to allow citizens to vote on Sunday sales and voted five-to-two allowing restaurants to pour alcohol three hours longer during the week.
The Douglasville City Council voted unanimously, during their Monday night meeting, to allow citizens to vote for or against Sunday sales on a Nov. 6 ballot referendum. The Council also voted five-to-two to allow restaurants to serve alcohol until 2 a.m. Sunday. Sunday pouring hours will also be extended from 10:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The two votes overrode two vetoes made by Mayor Harvey Persons last week. Those who voted to override the Mayor's veto on extended pouring hours were the same Council members who originally voted for the measure: Larry Yockey, Carl Pope, Samuel Davis, LaShun Burr-Danley and Doug Lequire.
