Robinson Files Lawsuit Against Commission's Redistricting Map

Douglas County Commissioner Kelly Robinson announced moments ago that he is filing a lawsuit in federal court to request the U.S. Department of Justice deny approval of redistricting.

(Editor's note: Robinson announced a press conference is scheduled for Friday, to announce that a lawsuit is being filed in federal court in Washington, D.C. to request the U.S. Department of Justice to deny approval of a redistricting map adopted by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners. The following is the announcement sent out by the Commissioner.) In recent years, it has been published that Douglas County has been found guilty of election violations. But, more importantly, it is with the current 2012 election cycle where it is claimed violations have grown in severity. When was the lawsuit filed? I've read the press announcement and the article that the DOJ approved the map but not that that the suit was actually filed. Will the lawsuit affect the upcoming elections?   more ›

Robinson: BOC Redistricting Map Action 'A Slap in the Face'

The procedural argument that politicians have the right to write [redistricting] maps to ensure they are re-elected–at the expense of vote dilution of a population based upon race, color, or membership in one of the language minority groups is prohibited.

Douglas County Board of Commissioner Kelly Robinson today released the following statement regarding the indecision this week by the U.S. Department of Justice to grant Douglas County pre-clearance on the Re-Districting Maps submitted in association with the 2010 Census and the BOC’s decision to still use the map in 2012 Primary. “Though the public hearing commencement map approved by Douglas County’s Board of Commissioners along party lines was not denied nor approved, their [DOJ] request for additional information and another 60 days to render their decision reinforces the role the DOJ has played since the Voting Rights Act was put into law: hold accountable those responsible for ensuring compliance of “one person, one vote” as afforded …

Hey, Gov. Deal is about to appoint the Solicitor General of Douglas County and skirt an election in which Sonya Compton would have run for this office in November. This is allowed by law. The Board of Elections, the same board repeatedly fined by the state for elections violations and appointed by the Board of Commissioners, did this.
