The hit series makes a huge comeback with this great installment.
They say New York is the city that never sleeps. That’s probably because it can’t seem to go more than a few days without an apocalyptic disaster dropping in to ruin everyone’s week. Between giant monsters, sweeping plagues, foreign invasions, alien invasions and attempts at domination by supervillains it’s a wonder that the citizens of said city even bat an eye anymore. So here we have Prototype 2, a game about an apocalyptic disaster in New York City. This particular series has decided to go the way of sweeping plague, but it threw in a few superhero elements as well (although the protagonists are anything but heroes; more on that later). Plot and Characters In case you’re an idiot, Prototype 2 is the sequel to the hit game Prototype …

This week is an example of extremely exaggerated extreme sports.
I don't think I can reasonably claim to be the extreme sporting type. When I was a kid I had a skateboard that my cousins and I would use to luge down my parents’ driveway, but at present the most extreme activity I partake in is driving a few miles over the speed limit. It’s not that I don’t like extreme sports; I watch the Winter Olympics and the X-Games most years. It’s just that I’ve never been one for putting life and limb on the line for cheap thrills. A rollercoaster serves that purpose well enough for me, or indeed playing a game where I’m allowed to simulate some fool putting his life on the line etc. So if you haven’t heard or guessed at this point, SSX is a game about extreme sports. More specifically, it’s about extreme …

A remake AND a shooter...joy...
You don’t have to say it: I know it’s been out for a while, and yes, I know it wasn’t a particularly anticipated title. For those of you who don’t know, Goldeneye: Reloaded was originally released on the Wii back in 2010. Being one who doesn’t own a Wii and who holds an eternal bigotry against motion-sensor gaming, I didn’t hear about it until it was re-released for the 360 and PS3 last month. Yes, they re-released the re-release. We’re getting very lazy, aren’t we, game companies? Still, with Release Season 2011 well and over, there isn’t much else out there in the way of recent releases that I haven’t already covered. That, and the ever-present issue of the fact that I only get these games as rentals, so I’m limited to whichever games …

The foul-mouthed and psychotic giant is back for more goofing off.
Sorry about my absence last week, gang. I’m sure you sobbed hot tears of despair while I was away. But, final exams don’t ace themselves, so I spent most of last week locked away in my room with my nose stuck firmly in thick pages of legal jargon. Now, after a week of thorough research, speculating on Public Administrative Theory, and heated political discussion, I’m ready for a cool dip in the intellectual simplicity of gaming, and what better to do that with than the videogame king of the immature and the crude, Saint’s Row the Third? Plot and Characters Saint’s Row the Third (hereafter known as SR3) picks up some unspecified number of years after the events of Saint’s Row 2. The Third Street Saints, the street gang from SR2, have risen…

In real life, war is hell. In Battlefield 3, it's awesome.
Ah, November, one of my favorite times of the year. Three of my favorite things in the world happen in November: the leaves fall, Thanksgiving brings the family together, and all the fall games releases go public. The theme this year is First Person Shooters, so with that in mind, let’s talk about one I knew I would never be able to get away with avoiding, Battlefield 3. First things first: the only Battlefield game I had played before this one was Battlefield 2, and I only played that one briefly. Just keep in mind that I’m not an expert on this series. Nay, I shall be examining it as an every-gamer. Plot and characters I barely played the campaign. I know from my friends and all the reviews that the Battlefield series is …

Dark Souls for the PS3 and 360 will unleash your inner fury...in a bad way.
I was really hoping I would be a bit more established before I was forced to do this to a game. But nay, says fate, it must be now, in my second review for Patch. So- let’s talk about a game called Dark Souls, shall we? Dark Souls is an Action RPG developed by From Software, a Japanese company which tries and fails to capture the spirit of a Western RPG. You know, ones with Wenches and burley, dirty barbarians and noble but equally-dirty-under-all -the-armor knights and all that jazz. We’ll get into the reasons it fails to do this later on. Plot and characters Know what? I have absolutely no idea. The cutscenes made no sense to me at all. I tried to follow along with what was going on, but I honestly had no idea what the narrator was …
