Georgia Highlands College hosted its annual spring reception on Feb. 28 at Heritage Hall, the downtown campus, to honor both scholarship recipients and donors. The college foundation made 89 awards totaling $77,000 for the 2012-2013 academic year. There are two newly established scholarships that were awarded this year: the Gatekey Scholarship, established by the Cartersville-Bartow Community Foundation and funded by grants from the Shaw Family Foundation and the Cartersville Schools Foundation for students from that area; and the GHC and Career Academy Dual Enrollment Scholarship, funded by the college and the Floyd County College and Career Academy for students who are pursuing careers in education. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has approved Level II status for Georgia Highlands College, allowing the institution to begin offering four-year degrees. Georgia Highlands had already announced that it planned to begin offering a Bachelor of Science curriculum in nursing at its Rome campus in 2013 pending SACS and Georgia Board of Nursing approval. The SACS approval means the college now can officially offer that degree and others, if approved by the Board of Regents and SACS. Dr. Laura Musselwhite, interim vice president for academic and student affairs, said the approval will create a pathway for Georgia Highlands to investigate future four-year programs to benefit its communities. Georgia Highlands College’s last president will be its next president. Rob Watts, who served as interim president of GHC when it was still Floyd College, will take that interim post again Jan. 1 while the college searches for a permanent replacement for Randy Pierce. The University System of Georgia announced Watt’s appointment in a news release this morning. Watts held the interim post from 2000 until Pierce took the presidency in June 2001. Pierce announced in late September that he was retiring, effective Dec. 31. “Rob is one of the University System’s most experienced leaders, given his responsibilities at the system office as well as leadership roles at three other institutions,” system Chancellor Hank Huckaby said in the news release…
