You do realize George that the governments role is to protect the country not financially support the citizens, right? If a woman wants to be that active shall we say (to be kind) she should be able to afford her own contraceptives and if not don't participate. Government should have no place in our personal lives particularly paying for our extra curricular activities!   more ›

YesforDouglasCounty.com is a website, launched Aug. 26, urging Douglas County and Douglasville residents to vote yes on Sunday alcohol sales, both at retail spots and in restaurants, in the upcoming election on Nov. 6. The purpose? To keep dollars in Douglas County. "Some people have said that Sunday sales will lead to increased availability of alcohol, but it's already all around us," Richard Segal said, chairman and organizer of the "Yes" campaign. "Cobb, Fulton, Villa Rica and Hiram have already passed Sunday sales. Alcohol is now available in 20 different local jurisdictions on Sunday, just in the counties adjacent to Douglas.” YesForDouglasCounty.com features an interactive map detailing many of the nearby retail locations where …

Update: District 66 Runoff Candidates Answer Patch Q&A

Bob Snelling will face off in a runoff against Mike Miller on Aug. 21 to decide who will earn the new Georgia House 66 seat.

Editor's note: In the earlier version of this Q&A an answer given by Mike Miller was mistakenly attributed to Bob Snelling. Douglasville Patch regrets the error and apologies for any confusion. The following paragraph is now in the proper place but was previously incorrectly part of a Bob Snelling answer: An unemployment rate in our state of 8.9 percent is simply unacceptable. Far too many people are out of work. Our young people have especially been hard hit as our teen unemployment rate is 26 percent. In Georgia, there are 46,414 unemployed teens (ages 16 to 19). Idle youth – especially young men- is a dangerous recipe for our community. The unemployment rate in Douglas County, Ga. remains too high. At the state Capitol we must do all …

I agree with Mike Miller that one of the priorities of the District 66 Representative will be to get the penalty removed from transportation funding incurred by the failure of the TSPLOST. Never should any of our currently elected officials have put a coercive penalty, which amounts to citizen blackmail, on a referendum to impose a tax on its people. This needs to be a priority.   more ›

Videos: Sunday Sales on Ballot, Commission Approves 4-1

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 today to allow two alcohol-related issues on the Nov. 6 ballot for a vote by Douglas County citizens.

As expected, Douglas County Commissioner Ann Jones-Guider was the only dissenting vote in a 4-1 decision to allow Sunday sales and by-the-drink measures on the Nov. 6 ballot. The Commissioners made the vote during their 10 a.m. meeting today. In the attached videos, each Commissioner gives his or her reasoning for their vote. Also attached are two videos from citizens appealing to the Commissioners, one in favor of placing the inititives on the ballot and one opposed. Other Douglasville Patch stories:

Jones-Guider Likely 'Lone Ranger' Vote Against Sunday Sales on Nov. Ballot

Jones-Guider said she expects the rest of the Board of Commissioners to allow the alcohol measures to be placed on the ballot.

Douglas County Commissioner Ann Jones Guider said she expects to be the "Lone Ranger" later today as the only dissenting vote opposing placing two alcohol-related resolutions on the November ballot. The Douglas County Commissioners will be voting at 10 a.m. to allow citizens to vote on regulating Sundays sales by retailers of beer and wine between the hours of 12:30 and 11:30 p.m., otherwise known as Sunday Sales. The second resolution will allow voters to permit restaurants to sell Sunday by-the-drink. Commissioners discussed the ordinances in their Monday work session meeting and will make the final decision in today's voting meeting. Not a lot of discussion was held during the work session because Jones-Guider said the Commissioners …

Yes that was a fantastic decision on the part of the county commissioners. A special election, in which only 2500 voters came out, two months before a general election where 35,000 voters voted. Statistically, the sample is too small to be able to apply to the next vote where over 50,000 voters will probably turn out.   more ›
