Re-Elected, Newly-Elected Officials to be Sworn in on Dec. 20

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners announced it will host a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony for re-elected and newly elected public officials on Dec. 20 at 6 p.m.

Dugan Advances in District 30 Race

Tuesday’s runoff election was to select the Republican nominee for the senate seat impacting Paulding, Carroll and Douglas counties. Voters will head back to the polls next month to determine the district’s next senator.

Residents in Senate District 30 now know who they’ll see on their ballots in a special election next month. After precincts in Paulding, Carroll and Douglas counties had tabulated their votes, it was Mike Dugan, a general contractor from Carrollton, who had prevailed in Tuesday’s runoff to determine the Republican nominee in the District 30 race, according to the Secretary of State’s website. Dugan had 3,606 ballots while 2,857 votes went Bill Hembree, who earlier this year resigned from his reelection bid in House District 67 to pursue the Senate seat. Dugan had 55.8 percent of the vote to Hembree’s 44.2. But the three counties represented in the race were split on the candidates. In Douglas County, Hembree took 1,526 of the 1,894 ballots…

Alexander Edges Snelling in House 66 Race

Democrat Kimberly Alexander will represent the newly-created Georgia House District 66, edging her Republican opponent Bob Snelling by 1,066 votes.

Democrat Kimberly Alexander will represent the newly-created Georgia House District 66, edging her Republican opponent Bob Snelling by an unofficial 1,066 votes, according to the Secretary of State's website. Alexander earned 11,813 votes, or 52.35 percent, while Snelling collected 47.64 percent, earning a total of 10,747 votes. House District 66 represents Douglas County and a portion of Paulding County. A resident of Douglas County, according to her website, Alexander is a single parent working in Corporate America that grew up in Paulding County. Gravley Goes Distance in House 67 Race

The Republican had only been in the race a few weeks following the resignation of incumbent Bill Hembree.

Republicans will retain a State House seat even after the party’s incumbent dropped out of his race to pursue another elected office. Based on unofficial results, voters have tapped Republican candidate Micah Gravley to serve as the next representative of District 67, which includes a southeastern portion of Paulding County. As of 10 p.m., overall results showed that Gravley had taken 13,783 votes, or 67.6 percent, to Democrat Leigh Mcmutry’s 6,613 votes, or 32.4 percent. Gravley had only been in the race a few weeks. Early Vote Numbers Lower; Today's Vote Going Smoothly

Douglas County Elections Supervisor Laurie Fulton said 45 percent of the county's active voters have already voted. That number is down from four years ago when 54 percent early voted.

However, four years ago voters had six weeks to early vote and this year they only had three weeks plus one Saturday. Alice Shapiro was in line at about 10 a.m. at Bill Arp Elementary and only waited 10 minutes. She voted for Sunday Sales and said, "Everybody should go have a drink!"
