Forest Park reaches the finals with a 56-47 win.
The Douglas County Lady Tigers were defeated, 56-47, by the Forest Park Panthers in the GHSA state basketball semifinals Wednesday.
Forest Park ends Lady Tiger's 30-win season in state semifinals.
It took Douglas County three months to build its 30-win undefeated season; it only took seven minutes for it to come crashing down. Midway through the third quarter of Wednesday's AAAA state semifinal game against Forest Park, the Lady Tigers had a commanding 26-16 lead. Seven minutes and a 25-7 run later, Douglas County trailed 39-33, never to lead again as Forest Park held on to beat the Lady Tigers 56-47. With Douglas County leading 26-16 in the third, Forest Park decided to change their defensive strategy, "We changed up our defense a little bit and went to a 2-2-1 half-court trap," Lady Panther coach Steven Cole said after the game. "That kept them away from the basket." Douglas County coach Chet Forsh seemed to agree with Cole's …

Douglas County girls get their 30th win of the season against Miller Grove in the state quarterfinals.
The Douglas County girls faced their toughest task since the mid-season Christmas tournament on Friday. Not only were the Lady Tigers facing Miller Grove, who defeated No. 10 Creekview in the second round, they were also playing away from home for the first time in the AAAA State Playoffs at the Coliseum on the campus of the University of West Georgia. Miller Grove jumped out to an early lead by moving the ball well on offense and pressuring the ball, full court, on defense. The Lady Tigers, however, went on a 7-2 run led by Monique Wells, who scored six of her 12 points in the first quarter, that cut the lead to two points. The first quarter was capped off by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by LaTara Spriggs to give Douglas County a 16-15 lead…

Douglas County girls dominate Mays in second round of State Playoffs.
Editor's Note: Come back to Patch on Thursday to see a complete fan photo gallery. The Douglas County girls team has only seen the “elite eight” of the state tournament once coming into this season. “Not since 96-97,” said head coach Chet Forsh. And that was in a time when teams played one fewer round than they do today. Tuesday the top-ranked Lady Tigers matched that team from 14 years ago by winning on their home court in front of a packed house against Mays High School, 80-55. The first half started with both teams scrambling on offense; possibly a case of nerves on both sides. As the two teams settled in, and the Lady Tigers assumed control, it was two seniors that stepped up for their respective teams. For Mays, Kristi Ware scored …

Lady Tigers ride an early lead to victory against Sequoyah in opening round of playoffs.
The Douglas County Lady Tigers came into the first round of the AAAA State Playoffs undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the GACA poll. The Lady Tigers secured the top overall seed by winning every game and defeating their opponents by a margin of 29 points on average during the season. Despite the dominance displayed by Douglas County, head coach Chet Forsh continues to preach consistency, “play hard, play slow.” It seemed, early on, that their first round game against Sequoyah High School would be another blowout, but the Lady Chiefs would absorb the early shot and continue to fight the Lady Tigers tooth and claw. On their home court the Lady Tigers jumped out to a big lead in the first quarter, led by junior Latara Spriggs who scored 10 of …

Douglas County girls destroy Osborne in region 5-AAAA quarterfinals, advance to play Sprayberry.
The unstoppable train known as the Douglas County Lady Tigers rolled into the quarterfinals of the Region 5-AAAA playoffs Tuesday. Earlier this season the Osborne Lady Cardinals lost to Douglas County by 10 points, while that may not seem significant it is the closest that any region opponent had been to beating Douglas County. Douglas County came into Tuesday’s game on their own court unbeaten and ranked fourth on the GACA Coach’s Poll. Osborne beat Hiram on February 11 to earn the right to play the No. 1 seed with a state playoff berth on the line. Osborne started the game with emotions running high and played with an enthusiasm that Douglas County has a habit of crushing early. The Lady Cardinals, led early by senior Destiny Ham, stayed…

The Tigers are bounced by Kell in their first game of Region 5-AAAA tournament.
The Kell Longhorns entered Saturday’s region 5-AAAA tournament game against Douglas County missing their top two scorers. The Tigers looked to run a hobbled opponent out of the building with an offensive system that scores 85 points per game. Things didn’t go according to plan. Kell held close in the first half, scoring 29 points and happy to be in the locker room at halftime down by just one point. At the start of the second half Kell began to effectively break the Douglas County full-court press. “We do a good job of handling pressure,” said Kell head coach Keith Whitaker. “We went with two guards and three bigs.” One of the “bigs” that coach Whitaker mentioned was freshman Grant Bryant. As the Longhorns continually broke the Tigers …

Douglas County boys and girls beat Alexander on a night where seniors were honored and a classmate was remembered.
The Douglas County basketball teams took the court with mixed emotions Friday against county rival Alexander. It was a night that seniors on the basketball and cheerleading squads were recognized, but it was also a night delayed because of the wake of a fallen classmate. Douglas County student Malique Walker, who died on Jan. 30, was remembered by his classmates with music, posters, and his old football number placed in the student section. The Lady Tigers came into the game Friday having risen to second on the GACA Coach’s Poll. The Lady Cougars came into the game winners in six of their last seven games. . It looked like the best chance anyone would have to knock off the unbeaten Douglas County girls going into the region 5-AAAA …

The Tigers dropped a heart breaker to region-leading Lithia as D.C. girls continue to dominate.
The Douglas County boys team found themselves in the middle of a three-games-in-four-nights stretch that will have a great impact on their season. The Tigers came into Thursday’s make-up game with Lithia Springs one and a half games ahead of the Lions in the region 5-AAAA standings. An 80-79 loss on Thursday pushed Douglas County into fifth place in the regional standings with just five games to play. In the first half Douglas County’s full-court press kept the game close along with scoring of juniors Vantrail Commings and Richard Kelly, who scored 10 and 13 points, respectively. After 16 minutes Lithia held onto a slim one-point lead. Momentum swung towards the Tigers in the second half. Douglas County built a 13-point lead late in the …
