A Villa Rica man was one of two men arrested last weekend on charges of forgery in the first degree and financial transaction card fraud. Charlie D. Gates in April 2010 allegedly gave his BB&T debit card and PIN to an unidentified man so that he could deposit a $6,900 counterfeit check into Gates' account, according to a Cobb County criminal warrant. After the man deposited the check at the BB&T ATM at 2400 Dallas Hwy., Gates allegedly withdrew $6,000 from his account, records show. "Said check was returned by the State Employee Credit Union as a forged check," authorities wrote in the warrant. "No such check had ever been issued." A Villa Rica golf course’s clubhouse was destroyed by fire Tuesday night, with a cause of the blaze undetermined as of Wednesday. The Frog clubhouse of the Georgian in Villa Rica caught fire sometime Tuesday night. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution quoted a man who resided in the area who said his wife spotted the fire shortly after 8 p.m., while WSB-TV reported that the fire broke out about 9 p.m. MaryAnn Phipps, coordinator and public information officer for Paulding County Fire/Rescue and Emergency Management Agency, told Dallas-Hiram Patch about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday that no residents or fire personnel were injured as a result of the blaze, adding that no one was in the building when the fire started. Michael Cory Camp, 21, was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he is in the Intensive Care Unit. Charges are pending against Camp because alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor in the crash.
Alcohol was involved in an early morning crash that killed a driver and passenger, both from Winston, and sent a Carrollton man to the Atlanta Medical Center, Gordy Wright said in an email, spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol. The two fatalities are identified as Zachary Lewis Crenshaw and Matthew Ryan Miller, both 20 years old.
