Special Olympic Athletes Showcase Skills

Douglas County’s Special Olympics athletes competed in the annual Special Olympics Georgia State Summer Games at Emory University.

Douglas County’s Special Olympics athletes competed in the annual Special Olympics Georgia State Summer Games at Emory University in Atlanta on May 18 through 20. The athletes competed in tennis and swimming. Douglas County Special Pops Tennis, a program of Douglas County Board of Commissioners through its Parks and Recreation Department, hosted five athletes in tennis. Ashanti Bassett, in only her second year of competing with Douglas County Special Pops tennis, won the Silver Medal in Level 3, Singles Tennis. She also brought home the Bronze Medal in Level 3, Unified Doubles. David Diaz was proudly awarded the Silver Medal in Level 1, Skills Tennis competition. Douglasville's Poet Laureate Donates New Book to Special Olympics

Alice Shapiro supports Douglas County by fostering love of poetry in local athletes.

When the Douglas County Special Olympics came to New Manchester High School on March 29, one athlete won a literary treat from Douglasville Poet Laureate, Alice Shapiro: a copy of her new poetry release, Saltian. The collection, which will be published April 10 by unbound CONTENT, was signed by each of the nearly 250 competing athletes and auctioned off during the closing ceremonies of the games. For Alice Shapiro, the donation is an opportunity to give back to Douglas County, while engaging local interest in poetry and the written word. “I love interactive fun projects that get kids and adults excited about poetry,” remarks Shapiro, “especially if it helps my amazing community.” In Saltian, award-winning writer Alice Shapiro embarks on an…
