The Douglasville Mayor and City Council honored Marine Lance Cpl. Scott "Boots" Harper at the Council meeting Monday night by making a presentation to his Step Mother, Angela Harper (video attached). Harper was an Alexander High School graduate who died during a combat mission in Afghanistan in Oct. 2011. He was operating in Helmand province as part of Operation Enduring Freedom when he suffered fatal injuries. A portion of Douglas Boulevard will be honorarily named for "Boots" Harper on Friday, Nov. 9 in a dedication ceremony, held from 1:30 to 2 p.m. The ceremony will take place at the western entrance to Arbor Place Mall and Olive Garden, with the unveiling of the sign revealing his name. Harper was operating in Helmand province as part of Operation Enduring Freedom when he suffered fatal injuries. "It is my understanding that he enlisted at the Marine Recruitment Station right there at the mall," Douglasville Mayor Harvey Persons said. Persons said he has known the family for some time. Although the street will not legally change its name, there will be signs on either side of Douglas Boulevard that will honor the 21-year-old Marine Lance Cpl. Lance Cpl. Scott Harper's memory was honored last week as the motorcade carrying his body slowly made its way through downtown Douglasville. Hundreds lined the streets, but barely a sound was heard during the moments the motorcade passed by, as those who came to pay tribute hung their heads and placed their hands over their hearts. The Frank P. Dorris American Legion Post 145 in Douglasville sent in these photos.

An Alexander High School alumnus was killed Thursday during a combat mission in Afghanistan. Marine Lance Cpl. Scott Harper, 21, of Winston was operating in Helmand province as part of Operation Enduring Freedom when he suffered fatal injuries, the Defense Department announced Friday. Harper served with the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, the 2nd Marine Division said in a press release Friday. He served with the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, from March to September 2010, then returned with his current unit in July.
