Alexander's Season Comes to an End

Cougars fell just short of making state playoffs as they lost to Villa Rica in Region 5-AAAA tournament.

Alexander head coach David Cottrell went into Wednesday’s Region 5-AAAA playoff game with Villa Rica knowing what to expect. After winning an earlier game in the tournament he referred to the Wildcats’ three starting guards as possible the “best trio in the region.” Coach Cottrell knows what he’s talking about. The Cougars kept close to the No. 3 seed for the entire first half. Junior Deandre Harper paced Alexander with eight of his team-high 14 points as the Cougars were down only one at halftime, 22-21. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Villa Rica’s trio of guards lived up to their billing in the second half. Both teams come out tentative in the third quarter, scoring only 19 points combined. In the fourth quarter the Wildcat guards took …

Third Time's a Charm for Chapel Hill

The Lady Panthers earn a state tournament bid by beating Alexander.

If there was one team Chapel Hill didn't want to see during the Region 5-AAAA tournament, it had to be Alexander. The Lady Cougars handed Chapel Hill two of their three region losses this year, including a 61-47 setback on Feb. 5. Tuesday, guess who the No. 2 seed Lady Panthers were stuck playing in the region quarterfinals: you guessed it, Alexander. The No. 7 seed Lady Cougars have had the Lady Panther's number this year.  Fortunately for Chapel Hill though, the third time happened to be a charm. Behind 30 points from senior Kanesha Looper, the Lady Panthers knocked off Alexander for the first time in three tries this season, 65-55. Alexander coach Brandon Boehman knew beating a team like Chapel Hill three times in one season was going …

Lady Tigers Gain Berth into State Playoffs

Douglas County girls destroy Osborne in region 5-AAAA quarterfinals, advance to play Sprayberry.

The unstoppable train known as the Douglas County Lady Tigers rolled into the quarterfinals of the Region 5-AAAA playoffs Tuesday. Earlier this season the Osborne Lady Cardinals lost to Douglas County by 10 points, while that may not seem significant it is the closest that any region opponent had been to beating Douglas County. Douglas County came into Tuesday’s game on their own court unbeaten and ranked fourth on the GACA Coach’s Poll. Osborne beat Hiram on February 11 to earn the right to play the No. 1 seed with a state playoff berth on the line. Osborne started the game with emotions running high and played with an enthusiasm that Douglas County has a habit of crushing early. The Lady Cardinals, led early by senior Destiny Ham, stayed…
