Rodney Jamaal Banks, 16, was sentenced today by Douglas County Superior Court Judge David T. Emerson after entering a guilty plea to charges of Robbery and Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery.

A Douglasville teen will serve 12 years in prison after robbing and holding multiple students at gun point outside New Manchester High School in 2011, according to Douglas County District Attorney David McDade. Rodney Jamaal Banks, 16, was sentenced today by Superior Court Judge David T. Emerson after entering a guilty plea to charges of Robbery and Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery. Following his release from prison, Banks will be required to serve eight years on probation. He is also banished from Douglas County. “When students can’t even go to school without being fearful of being robbed at gunpoint, then something is just flat-out wrong,” said McDade. “We have to send a message that is unmistakable, that is loud, and clearly …

New Manchester High School student Talmaj Mitchell, 18, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds.

New Manchester High School student Talmaj Mitchell, 18, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds. His mother told WSBTV that her son has a learning disability and took the "large knife to school to defend himself against bullies." After being released from the Douglas County Jail on $1,000 bond, Mitchell told WSBTV, "I was just trying to make a statement. I was trying to tell them just leave me alone and everything. I had no intention on using it." According to the report, he said the ninth-grader said students would take his video games, his tennis shoes and make fun of his disability. The mother told WSBTV that her son has been expelled for the rest of the year.

Tweet Costs New Manchester Senior His Prom, Graduation

Reginald Wright is suspended for the rest of the year.

The second New Manchester High senior arrested last month on charges of threatening an attack on the school has been suspended for the rest of the year and banned from prom and graduation. Reginald Wright and his family, who live in the 2200 block of Greenwood Meadows Lane, argue that the punishment from the Douglas County Board of Education is too harsh and that authorities have taken the supposed threat—a single tweet sent March 22—way out of context, WSB-TV reported. You can’t see Wright’s Twitter feed anymore because his account, @VirginsLoveAsh, under the alias Ashton Trey Williams, has been removed. The offending tweet was “I’m gonna blow up New Manchester. Fear me grrr!!” It came amid a series of tweets from Wright and others …

Douglasville's Poet Laureate Donates New Book to Special Olympics

Alice Shapiro supports Douglas County by fostering love of poetry in local athletes.

When the Douglas County Special Olympics came to New Manchester High School on March 29, one athlete won a literary treat from Douglasville Poet Laureate, Alice Shapiro: a copy of her new poetry release, Saltian. The collection, which will be published April 10 by unbound CONTENT, was signed by each of the nearly 250 competing athletes and auctioned off during the closing ceremonies of the games. For Alice Shapiro, the donation is an opportunity to give back to Douglas County, while engaging local interest in poetry and the written word. “I love interactive fun projects that get kids and adults excited about poetry,” remarks Shapiro, “especially if it helps my amazing community.” In Saltian, award-winning writer Alice Shapiro embarks on an…

Joshua Couch, 17, is in the Douglas County jail tonight after being charged with criminal attempt to commit a felony Tuesday.

Joshua Couch, 17, is in the Douglas County jail tonight after being charged with criminal attempt to commit a felony on Tuesday. According to wsbtv.com, Couch had been doing Internet searches on hazardous chemicals like cyanide and was jailed for making terroristic threats against his school, New Manchester High. Couch's Douglas County sheriff's arrest report says no bond was given. A Douglas County Sentinel article has a quote from sheriff's investigator Sgt. Jesse Hambrick. ""We have a four-year history with Mr. Couch and know him and his family," Hambrick said in the Sentinel article. "Two individuals came forward with information that he may be exploring this. As soon as we were made aware of the threats, we acted quickly and were able…

New Manchester Makes State Playoffs

The Jaguar boys join the Douglas County boys and girls and the Chapel Hill girls in the AAAA basketball tournament.

New Manchester in its first year of existence has earned its first berth in the Georgia High School Association state boys basketball tournament. The Jaguars finished fourth in the Region 5-AAAA tournament, losing to Lithia Springs in the semifinals and to Osborne in the third-place game, the Douglas County Sentinel reported. But earlier wins over Pope and Alexander were good enough for a spot in the state AAAA playoffs. New Manchester will open the tournament Friday at three-time defending state champion Miller Grove, the No. 1 seed from Region 6-AAAA. The winner will play Creekview or Loganville on Feb. 29. The Jaguars would be on the road again. Also making it to the AAAA boys tournament is Douglas County, which lost the 5-AAAA title …

GHSA Groups Tigers with Newnan, East Coweta

New Manchester and Lithia Springs have a familiar region in the new six-class system, while Chapel Hill will spend a lot of time in Atlanta, and Alexander could pile up miles on I-85.

The solution seemed simple when the Georgia High School Association announced last month that Douglas County High School would move up next year to the new AAAAAA classification, at least one step higher than the other county schools. Just add the Tigers to what is Region 4-AAAAA in the current five-class system, grouping Douglas County with the likes of South Cobb (12 miles away), Pebblebrook (13 miles), McEachern (18 miles) and Hillgrove (18 miles). The GHSA decided to go a different direction with its move to six classes for the next two school years. In proposed regions unveiled this afternoon, Douglas County is the northernmost member of the six-school Region 3-AAAAAA. Joining the Tigers in one subregion are Newnan and East Coweta, …
