Alexander Boys Follow Two Close Losses with Blowout Win

The Cougars allow just 28 points in the victory

Deandre Harper scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds as Alexander escaped the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School with a 53-28 win over Johnson County, Tennessee, Thursday. Alexander aimed its defensive focus on Johnson County's Jason Steele, who is averaging over 25 points per game this season. They held him to 15 points, and no other Johnson County player had more than four. Despite the solid results, Alexander head coach David Cottrell found some flaws in the Cougars' performance. "We've got to have better help team defense and I didn't think in the first half we did that very well," Cottrell said. "We could have taken some charges and we didn't." "I thought in the first half we didn't really play well," he added. "The first …

Alexander Girls Salvage Victory in Lake City Classic Finale

Cougars avenge an early-season loss with 51-24 win.

The Alexander Cougars salvaged a win in the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School on Thursday, and it came at the expense of a regional foe. Katica Favors and Brooke Davidson led a dominant effort for Alexander as they handily beat South Paulding, 51-24. "We play South Paulding on Tuesday night and that's a region game that counts, and so it's important for us," said Alexander head coach Brandon Boehman. "We played them the first game of the year and they beat us by three. So we came out today and we kind of wanted to send a message that Tuesday's going to be a different story." Favors dominated the interior on both ends of the floor as she scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Davidson displayed consistent accuracy from outside …

Alexander Boys Drop Close Game to Mays, 36-34

Alexander lost their second game in two days at the Lake City Classic. The coaching staff is looking for more offensively from this team.

The Alexander Cougars dropped a heartbreaker on Wednesday, 36-34 to the Mays Raiders in the Lake City Classic Basketball Tournament at Allatoona High School. Alexander played from behind for the majority of the game -- always keeping the score close -- but wasn't able to pull even with a Mays team with a decided size advantage until the final minutes of the game. Behind by one point at halftime, and four points heading into the fourth quarter, the Cougars changed defensive strategies. Alexander started jumping the ball at half court, putting immense pressure on whoever had the ball and cutting off passing lanes to everyone else. The new strategy worked. Alexander held Mays to just two points in the fourth quarter. The problem was that the …

Hillgrove Boys Survive Alexander Comeback

The Hawks hold on for a 3-point tournament win.

The Hillgrove Hawks saw a 10-point second-half lead dwindle to naught before a late surge gave them a 43-40 win over Alexander in their opening game of the Lake City Classic at Allatoona High School Tuesday. The Hawks led 34-24 with three minutes left in the third quarter, then saw that lead dissipate in a 12-2 Alexander run that knotted the game at 36-36 with five minutes left to play. "I thought we stopped boxing out, and we stopped defending," Hillgrove head coach Edward Morris said. "We're having spurts this year where we go through a three-minute stretch where we just don't do little things, and then a 10-point lead becomes a four-point lead. If we do those little things, it might be a different game." Hillgrove led 42-40 with 10.6 …
