Maria Francesca Payton Matthews, 50, Dies

Maria Francesca Payton Matthews, 50 of Douglasville, passed away Saturday, Sept. 22. She was born Jan. 15, 1962 in Fulton County to Barbara Cook Payton and the late Melvin L. Payton. She worked as an administrative professional for Automated Print and was a member of The Cartersville Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin L. Payton and her brother, Leslie Melvin Payton. She is survived by her mother, Barbara Cook Payton of Douglasville; daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Joe Pace of Carrollton. Alice Matilda Hasford Henslee, 86, Dies

Alice Matilda Hasford Henslee, 86 of Villa Rica, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 18. She was born on Oct. 5, 1925 in Paulding County, the daughter of the late Jim and Farie Tibbetts Hasford. She worked for a short period of time at the Atlanta West Hospital in the Housekeeping Department and has primarily been a homemaker. She was a member of the Ephesus Baptist Church in Winston. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Henslee; sons, Hubert Verlon Henslee, Kenny Melvin Henslee and Jerry Mac Henslee; sisters, Lessie Gibson and Jewell Cartte; brother, Leon Hasford. Victor P. Rockhill, Jr., 73 of Whitesburg passed away on Sunday, Sept. 16. He was born on Oct. 31, 1938 in Pittsburgh, PA. to Victor P. Rockhill and Helen Krell Rockhill. He was a founding member and pastor of Water of Life Christian Center for more than 35 years. Rockhill was preceded in death by his father, Victor P. Rockhill, Sr. and his wife, Lois Coss Rockhill. Patsy Ruth Gray Boyd, 69 of Douglasville passed away Saturday, Sept. 8.  She was born on Aug. 31, 1943 in Douglas County the daughter of the late Robert Gray and the late Annie Ruth Blair Gray Norton. She worked as an office manager for A. B. and G. Fire Restoration and was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Phillip Gray; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Boyd and Robert Boyd. Courthouse Employee Susan Anne Waldrop Dies

Memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. from Hightower’s Memorial Chapel with Minister Benny Waldrop officiating.

Susan Anne Waldrop, 55 of Winston, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 5. She was born Aug. 20, 1957 in Villa Rica, to Christine Shadix Waldrop and the late Charles William Waldrop, Jr. She worked during her career at the Douglas County Courthouse and was a member of Ephesus Baptist Church. Survivors are her mother, Christine Shadix Waldrop of Douglasville; spouse, Birney Montcalm of Winston; daughter, Melinda Montcalm Huckabee of Buford; and son, Anthony Charles Montcalm of Winston; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Raymond 'Pop' Strickland Dies

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m. from the Friendship Baptist Church in the Fairplay Community with Rev. Eric Evans, Rev. Johnny White and Minister Mike Mallory officiating.

Raymond Ernest “Pop” Strickland, 96 of Douglasville, passed away, Aug. 12. He was born Feb. 1, 1916 in Douglas County to the late Ernest Paul Strickland and Mary Ellen Strickland. “Papa”, whom he was affectionately called by his family, built Pop’s Country Store in 1946 at the corner of Highway 166 and Post Rd. and remains a local landmark in the Fairplay Community. Until very recently, you could find Papa sitting in a chair in the store greeting customers and friends with a smile and down-home conversation. Strickland served Douglas County citizens as a Commissioner from 1962 to 1972. Pop was the eldest member of the Friendship Baptist Church in the Fairplay Community. Jimmie Fouts Ransom, 68 of Douglasville, passed away Saturday, Aug. 11. She was born in Austell, on Sept.16, 1943 to Jim Macon Fouts and Ruth Pannell Fouts. She was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having received an Honorable Discharge. After her Navy Career, she was a loving mother, homemaker and a member of Full Gospel Church in Lithia Springs. In addition to her parents, Jim Macon Fouts and Ruth Jeanette Pannell Fouts, she was preceded in death by one brother. Survivors are her daughter and son-in-law, Kellie Tucker and Chris Eubanks of Douglasville and one grandson. Michael C. Bagwell, Sr., age 64 of Villa Rica, passed away, Aug. 8. He was born Feb. 13, 1948 in Atlanta, to William Charles Bagwell and the late Betty Joyce Whaley Bagwell. He worked for Charlie’s Trading Post, and his passion was driving race cars and wrestling. He was Baptist by faith. In addition to his mother, Betty Joyce Whaley Bagwell, he was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Bagwell. Gerald Ray Herring, Jr., age 46 of Dallas, passed away Aug. 4. He was born in Columbus, Georgia on Oct. 26, 1965 to Gerald Ray Herring and Sara Eugina Funderburk Herring.
