None of the four candidates vying for the Republican nomination were able to secure over half the votes cast, according to unofficial results.
Two of four men vying to become the next state senator from District 30 will have about a month to convince voters that they’re the best choice for the Republican nomination. According to unofficial results on the Secretary of State’s website, Bill Hembree and Mike Dugan will advance to a Dec. 4 runoff to determine the GOP nominee for the office. The winner of that election will move on to face James Camp, a Libertarian, in a Jan. 8 special election to ultimately determine the district’s next senator. Hembree earned the most support in Tuesday’s special election at 27,565 votes, but the total was only good for 48.4 percent of the vote—not the half-plus-one share of the vote needed to avoid a runoff. Four Republicans so far have entered the race to fill the withdrawn candidacy of Bill Hamrick. Qualifying for the Republican special primary election and a Jan. 8 special election to select the next senator ends Friday.
Republican voters in portions of three counties are set to weigh in on a special primary election on this year’s general election day following a state senator’s appointment to another position. Bill Hamrick, the Carrollton Republican who represented Senate District 30, was recently tapped by Gov. Nathan Deal to serve as superior court judge on the Coweta Judicial Circuit. Prior to the appointment, Hamrick was on track to serve another term after facing no opposition in the July primary and having no Democrats nor independents seek the seat. District 30 includes a southern portion of Paulding County, most of Carroll County and a western portion of Douglas County. The Georgia Secretary of State’s Office on Monday announced the details of …

Senator Bill Hamrick's new job as a superior court judge could mean an interesting battle for his seat, one that could include Paulding resident, Glenn Richardson, the former House speaker who resigned amid scandal on Jan 1, 2010.
Gov. Nathan Deal has named state Sen. Bill Hamrick, R-Carrollton, as the latest superior court judge on the Coweta Judicial Circuit. His departure could mean an interesting battle for his seat, one that could include Paulding resident, Glenn Richardson, the former House speaker who resigned amid scandal on Jan 1, 2010. Even with the appointment today, Hamrick's resignation is dated Sept 10, according to Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Jim Gallaway in his latest Political Insider. Hamrick represents District 30 which includes the southern portion of Paulding County, most of Carroll County and a western portion of Douglas County. Deal will call for a special election for the District 30 seat, most likely December 11 or 60 days after …
