A cold front is expected to push across north and central Georgia this week, ushering in higher temps and possible thunderstorms by Wednesday.

"Instability and wind shear values appear sufficient to support the development of scattered to numerous thunderstorms on Wednesday, especially during the afternoon and evening," meteorologists say in a hazardous weather statement, which applies to Cartersville and Bartow County. "Strong upper level support suggest a few storms could be severe across north and central Georgia." In Douglasville, fog may be a problem tonight, after 2 a.m., according to the NWS forecast. Slight Chance of Freezing Rain This Morning

There will be a slight chance of freezing rain before noon in Douglas County today, with a 60 percent chance of rain, according to the National Weather Service.

Today is expected to be cloudy, with a high near 45. The east wind will be around 10 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 15 mph.  Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch is possible. Rain is also likely tonight, before 8 p.m.

Update: No Snow Accumulations Predicted, Black Ice Likely

Douglas County is still under a winter storm watch but no snow accumulations are predicted. Rain predicted to end at about 1 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service has placed all of North Georgia, including Douglas County, under a Winter Storm Watch until mid- to late-morning on Friday, Jan. 18. A Winter Storm Watch indicates that conditions may develop for winter precipitation. The National Weather Services does not anticipate issuing a Winter Storm Warning for Douglas County or the metro Atlanta area. A strong upper level low was located above Meridian, Mississippi, about 7 a.m. Thursday morning and was predicted to track to the northeast across Alabama and Georgia. The rain ahead of this low pressure area is what Douglas County is currently experiencing, and should end about 1 p.m. Thursday. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for north Georgia, which warns of light snow and black ice from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning.

Snow is expected across north Georgia this afternoon and tonight, according to the National Weather Service's winter weather advisory, which goes into effect at 1 p.m. and replaces the previous winter storm watch. A "cold polar air mass" is expected to spread into north Georgia as widespread rain shifts south. The result: Rain will mix with and change over to snow across portions of north Georgia, including Douglasville and Douglas County. The heaviest snowfall would be in the northeast Georgia mountains.
