Douglas County residents will be able to bring their personal documents, tax records, financial reports, old love letters - anything on paper! - to the Douglas County Courthouse on Saturday morning, May 18, for "The Great Douglas County Shredding Event," sponsored by the Douglas County Board of Commissioners and Wells Fargo Bank. Wells Fargo Bank is bringing a bank-quality shredding truck to the Courthouse parking lot, and residents will be able to "drive through" the area with the truck to have their papers shredded while they watch. The shredding will be conducted by a FDIC contractor, so will be the diamond cross-shredding that is not reconstructable. Advance voting for the State Senate District 30 Republican Runoff for Douglas County voters will be held Tuesday through Friday, Nov. 27 to 30, in the Voter Registration Office, first floor, of the Douglas County Courthouse. The Republican run-off for the nomination is between Bill Hembree and Mike Dugan. The following Douglas County precincts are in State Senate District 30. Therefore, only voters in the following precincts are eligible to vote in the run-off election. The run-off election will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4, and all applicable precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters who were registered by Oct. 9 are eligible to vote in the runoff, even if they did not vote in the primary on Nov. 6. The Douglas County Courthouse will host a flu shot clinic for the public on Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Courthouse Atrium. Flu shots will be available to any person age nine and older, and will be administered by the Douglas Public Health Department. The cost of the flu shot is $20, payable in cash. Medicare recipients may get their flu shots free of charge (please present Medicare card), and the Health Department accepts State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP CIGNA). The flu vaccine is in ample supply this year, but flu cases have already been reported in 46 states, including Georgia. The Centers for Disease Control recommend that everyone over the age of six months get a flu shot, but particularly people who have asthma, …

The Douglas County Courthouse will be filled with ghosts, goblins, ballerinas, superheroes, and laughter Halloween afternoon, Wednesday, Oct. 31, as Douglas County employees renew their annual Trick-or-Treating event in the Courthouse for kids ages 12 and under. This is the eighth year of this holiday tradition. Any child, accompanied by an adult, is welcome to go through the Courthouse and trick-or-treat (all treats) in offices that will be marked with a smiling jack-o’-lantern on the door. The tenth annual September Saturdays Festival will be held Saturdays, Sept. 22 and 29 on the grounds of the Douglas County Courthouse, and vendor and exhibitor registration is now open for the festival’s Community Marketplace. More than 100 vendors and exhibitors are anticipated for the largest annual festival in Douglas County. Saturday, Sept. 22, is Heroes Day plus the Touch-a-Truck Experience. Heroes Day honors our everyday heroes - Sheriff’s deputies, firemen, EMTs, 911 operators, military, veterans, reserves, and teachers. Suzie Elie, 24, pleaded guilty to beating her 3-year-old son and received 30 years, with 20 years to serve behind bars in a Douglas County courtroom Monday, according to wsb.com. Ellie pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, family violence, child cruelty and battery after Douglas County prosecutors said she severely beat her son last November, the report said. Chief Magistrate Judge Susan Camp denied bond to three of the four men accused of being involved with the General Western Cotton Mill fire on May 12, according to wsbtv.com. According to the report, bond has been denied to the three men charged with arson: Jeromie Hand, 17, of Douglasville, Terry Carringer 18 of Hiram and Adrian Bond, 18 of Shelbyville, TN. Christopher Roberts, 20 of Douglasville, was charged with the lesser crime of criminal damage to property. He was granted $3,500 bond and ordered to go to substance abuse counseling.
