Forever friends can be adopted this Saturday, April 27, at Pet Things, 6880 Douglas Boulevard. Animals from the Douglas County Animal Shelter will be on site for adoptions from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The adoption fee is $35 which includes adoption and micro-chipping. et Things will donate a $20 coupon for each adoption that will be good for store merchandise. Dogs and cats will be available.

About 30 residents gathered today in front of the Douglas County Courthouse to protest the Douglas County Animal Shelter's new director, Rick Smith, and the policies he has put in place. County spokesman, Wes Tallon, told WSBTV that Smith has been on the job for less than 90 days. “Mr. Smith has got to be given a chance," he said. "He has not been here long enough to establish his programs and what he plans on doing,” Tallon said. Douglas County Animal Control recently impounded a sick raccoon from the Campbellton area that tested positive for the rabies virus, and are taking this opportunity to remind residents that wild animals, some possibly with the rabies virus, still roam Douglas County. The raccoon did not interact with any domesticated animals or humans. Even though Douglas County is mainly residential and commercial, there are large land areas where wild animals live in the County, including Sweetwater State Conservation Park (2549 acres), Boundary Waters Recreational Park (500 acres +/-), and the Dog River Park (900 acres +/-). Wild animals, such as raccoons, foxes, bats and skunks, are prevalent in Douglas County and frequently carry the rabies virus, …
