Chapel Hill Middle School Teacher Honored as Hero in the Classroom

Douglas County's Sean Leatherwood is one of 16 teachers across Georgia who will be honored for educational excellence during the 2012 NFL season.

Symetra, SunTrust and the Atlanta Falcons honored Chapel Hill Middle School teacher Sean Leatherwood as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” on Nov. 16, 2012 during a surprise school assembly. Leatherwood is an eighth-grade Social Studies instructor at the middle school. “Coach Leatherwood is more than a teacher to his students. He models his classroom around a system called ‘living through history.’ Each class member is involved in Georgia’s history — from the creation of colonies all the way up through present day. This makes history more interesting and memorable because students look at the decisions of early Americans as if the decision was their own,” said Jeremiah Cook, a former student of Leatherwood. “Coach Leatherwood’s approach …

4 Students Place in Thinking Olympiad

Four Douglas County students competed and placed second overall at GA Tech’s Second Semi-Annual Computational Thinking Olympiad Saturday.

Four Douglas County students competed and placed second overall at GA Tech’s Second Semi-Annual Computational Thinking Olympiad Saturday. The four middle school students who competed were: Ethan Harrison, Zyn Liang, Paula Torres, and Sebastian Torres. As a team, they went up against approximately 25 other teams from the greater Atlanta area. Chapel Hill Wins MS Softball Title

After an epic battle and 10 hours of softball, the Lady Wildcats bring home the middle school trophy.

After completing a perfect regular season, the Chapel Hill Middle School Lady Wildcats were defeated in preliminary play by the Yeager Middle School Mustangs, whose season's only blemish was a one-run loss to Chapel Hill.  This set up a dramatic scenario requiring the Lady Cats to win three games on Friday night, including two against the tough Yeager team.  After defeating third-place Mason Creek Friday afternoon, Chapel Hill won game one against the Mustangs 13-8, staving off a furious rally.  Yeager began the decisive championship game right where they left off with timely hitting, building a lead throughout the contest.  By the final inning, the Mustangs' lead was 8-4, and 9 of the last 10 Lady Cat hitters had been retired.  This set …
