Alexander High School is the first County high school to hold graduation ceremonies.
Douglas County high schools will hold graduation ceremonies on May 31 and June 1. Dates and times are as follows: Alexander High School: May 31 at 7 p.m., at the University of West Gerogia Chapel Hill High School: June 1 at 6 p.m., at the University of West Georgia Douglas County High School: June 1 at 9 a.m., at the University of West Georgia Lithia Springs High School: June 1 at 1 p.m., at the University of West Georgia New Manchester High School: May 31 at 8 p.m., on the New Manchester football field.

Chapel Hill High School graduate Air Force Airman Crystal T. Bynes graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, TX.

Air Force Airman Crystal T. Bynes graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, TX. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Bynes is the daughter of Alfreda and Brian Brown of Nightfall Terrace, Douglasville. She is a 2010 graduate of Chapel Hill High School, Douglasville.

Three Chapel Hill High School students, all members of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), attended the state FBLA conference at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta from March 15 and 16. The members competed in various state competitive events and attended several leadership workshops at the conference. Two members brought home awards. Justin bell placed 1st in the Public Speaking I Competition and the team of Justin Bell and Rasheed Tromp placed 1st in Marketing qualifying them for Nationals in June. The chapter also won Chapter of the Year, Honor Roll Level Award. Six Chapel Hill High School Future Business Leaders will be headed to state competition in Atlanta from March 15 through 16.
Twelve Chapel Hill High School students, all members of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), attended the Regions FBLA conference at Hiram High School on Jan. 31. The members competed in various region competitive events and attended several leadership workshops at the conference. Ten members brought home awards, and six will be advancing to the State Leadership Conference in Atlanta, March 15 through 16. Students from Chapel Hill High School donated more than 4,300 clothing items to the Warehouse of Hope this year and participated in the FALCAN food drive and the Gift of Love Backpack project.

The Chapel Hill High School Key Club donated more than 4,300 clothing items to the Warehouse of Hope this year, with the NJROTC class having contributed 2,600 of those items. Warehouse of Hope serves approximately 900 families per week with food, toiletries, supplies, diapers, etc. According to Warehouse of Hope, Chapel Hill High School is their largest contributor! In addition, the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Club partnered with the Atlanta Falcons for the FALCAN food drive along with holding a Blood Drive for the American Red Cross. Thomas Melvin Crook, 69, of Douglasville, who served more than 36 years in education and athletics, passed away Thursday, Aug. 23. He was born Nov. 20, 1942 in Asheville, N.C, the son of the late Thomas Albert Crook and the late Mazie Walker Crook. He was a member of the Enka High School Class of 1960. He continued his education at the University of Georgia in Athens receiving his BS in Education in 1964, Masters in Education in 1974, and Masters in Administration in 1984. He received his Specialist in Administration from the Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Ala. in 1987. Coach Crook served as the Assistant Coach at Cedartown High School from 1964-1971 where he coached football, basketball and track. From 1971-1977 he served …

New Manchester in its first year of existence has earned its first berth in the Georgia High School Association state boys basketball tournament. The Jaguars finished fourth in the Region 5-AAAA tournament, losing to Lithia Springs in the semifinals and to Osborne in the third-place game, the Douglas County Sentinel reported. But earlier wins over Pope and Alexander were good enough for a spot in the state AAAA playoffs. New Manchester will open the tournament Friday at three-time defending state champion Miller Grove, the No. 1 seed from Region 6-AAAA. The winner will play Creekview or Loganville on Feb. 29. New Manchester and Lithia Springs have a familiar region in the new six-class system, while Chapel Hill will spend a lot of time in Atlanta, and Alexander could pile up miles on I-85.
The solution seemed simple when the Georgia High School Association announced last month that Douglas County High School would move up next year to the new AAAAAA classification, at least one step higher than the other county schools. Just add the Tigers to what is Region 4-AAAAA in the current five-class system, grouping Douglas County with the likes of South Cobb (12 miles away), Pebblebrook (13 miles), McEachern (18 miles) and Hillgrove (18 miles). The GHSA decided to go a different direction with its move to six classes for the next two school years.
