Late 3-Pointer Buries Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill loses to Cass 59-58 in the state playoffs.

The final 10 seconds of Saturday's first-round AAAA state tournament game between Cass and Chapel Hill were so intense that Panther coach Lee Wilson "almost had a heart attack." Wilson's counterpart at Cass, Greg Scott, says he didn't exhale until he got to the locker room. With 9.7 seconds left in the game and his team trailing 58-56, Cass' Sam Taylor drilled a 3-pointer to give the Colonels the lead, but the drama didn't stop there. Chapel Hill then got off three potential game-winning shots in the game's final five seconds, including two tips. But none went in, and Cass escaped Chapel Hill with a 59-58 victory. "It's March madness in February," Scott said. And madness it was. Chapel Hill was down 11 in the fourth quarter, and the game …

Third Time's a Charm for Chapel Hill

The Lady Panthers earn a state tournament bid by beating Alexander.

If there was one team Chapel Hill didn't want to see during the Region 5-AAAA tournament, it had to be Alexander. The Lady Cougars handed Chapel Hill two of their three region losses this year, including a 61-47 setback on Feb. 5. Tuesday, guess who the No. 2 seed Lady Panthers were stuck playing in the region quarterfinals: you guessed it, Alexander. The No. 7 seed Lady Cougars have had the Lady Panther's number this year.  Fortunately for Chapel Hill though, the third time happened to be a charm. Behind 30 points from senior Kanesha Looper, the Lady Panthers knocked off Alexander for the first time in three tries this season, 65-55. Alexander coach Brandon Boehman knew beating a team like Chapel Hill three times in one season was going …

Gooden Sparks Chapel Hill in Win Over Paulding County

Chapel Hill guard comes off the bench to lead the team in scoring.

Eric Gooden doesn’t normally come off the bench for Chapel Hill, but after Saturday’s performance in the Panthers’ 63-51 win over Paulding County in the Region 5-AAAA tournament, head coach Lee Wilson might have to consider it as part of a new strategy. Gooden led the Panthers with 19 points, despite playing just three quarters for disciplinary reasons. “We teach principal over passion,” Wilson said. “He missed a shootaround, so he had to sit out the first quarter.” Gooden was the catalyst in the pivotal third quarter in which Chapel Hill turned a 25-25 tie into a 46-37 lead. He scored 11 points in the quarter and drew a tip of the cap from his opposing coach. “He was something of a surprise. He was not in our scouting report tonight, but …

Cougar junior Deandre Harper scores 28 including a buzzer beater to send the game into OT.

The Alexander Cougars came out on top against county rival Chapel Hill in a back and forth overtime nail biter on Saturday. Alexander pulled away in the overtime period to win 57-53 at Chapel Hill High School.  Secondary to the game was the great one-on-one battle between Alexander Junior Deandre Harper (28 points) and Chapel Hill Senior Tevin Parker (17 points). “It was fun, we are good friends, he showed me up and I showed him up,” said Harper after the game.  Alexander’s record rises to 9-4 with the win, while Chapel Hill falls to 10-5 on the season. Alexander raised its’ record to 5-7 as Chapel Hill fell to 7-6. Chapel Hill tried to dictate the tempo through much of the game against the much taller Alexander team. The Lady Panthers spread the ball on offense in a set reminiscent of the old “four corners” offense of Dean Smith. “We tried to capitalize on the things that we’ve seen”, says head coach Christopher Long.
