Get Involved: Your Kids Can Breathe Better at School

Douglas County schools, students and parents are encouraged to address traffic and air quality challenges.

As students and parents settle into a new routine, there are many things that they can do to help improve air quality and traffic congestion such as taking the bus, carpooling and not idling in school carpool lanes. Through its Clean Air Schools programs, The Clean Air Campaign works with school communities across Georgia to take action for cleaner air through transportation. Last year, more than 300 Georgia schools participated, including the following Douglas County schools: Schools in 38 districts implemented Pool to School, Ride the Bus! Brandy's Death Is Tragic Reminder to be Alert for School Bus Stop Arms

It's the second week of school for Douglas County residents and children's lives depend on drivers' alertness for the School Bus Stop Arm.

Douglas County High School junior 17-year-old Brandy Hart was killed last year and 51-year-old Shirley Barker McManners was charged with vehicular homicide when Hart was hit by McManners' car right after she got off a school bus. The accident happened at Dorris Rd. off Cedar Mountain Rd. "Either she didn't see the bus' stop sign, or she ran it," Sheriff Phil Miller said. "She struck the 17-year-old as she was crossing the street and unfortunately killed her." "During the GaDOE stop arm violation survey on May 3 we had eight vehicles violate the stop arm law," B. Rodney Arrington said, Douglas County School System transportation director. That means on a random school day last year, Douglas County bus drivers reported that they witnessed …

Freshman Summer Camp Held Today

Rising nineth graders will arrive at Douglas County High School for the annual BRIDGES Freshman Summer Camp. The purpose of this camp is to prepare each student for their transition from middle school to high school.

Rising nineth graders will arrive at Douglas County High School for the annual BRIDGES Freshman Summer Camp. The purpose of this camp is to prepare each student for their transition from middle school to high school. Students will attend various sessions that will give them a head start to their success at DCHS. Students will enjoy Field Day activities where they learn to work as a team, a necessary skill for success in high school. Students will also preview the curriculum for 9th Grade Language Arts, American Government, Biology, and Math 1. Goal Setting and Time Management workshops will also be held.  To culminate the end of camp, a What Not to Wear Fashion Show will be held to familiarize students with our dress code!!!  A CTAE …
