Greyhounds' early dominance proves too difficult to recover from, but both teams advance to state
To have a chance to upset highly regarded Pope on its home mats, Alexander co-coach Sean Moistner knew that his Cougars had to avoid being pinned in matches where the rugged Greyhounds were favored. Losses could be weathered, but not pins. “In the weight classes where they have some good kids,” Moistner theorized Saturday before the Region 5-AAAA Duals Tournament final, “our kids have got to survive. They’ve got to find a way to fight and stay on the mat six minutes with them.” His assessment was dead-on, but the Greyhounds were at the top of their game early, building a 34-0 lead on the strength of five pins in the first six matches en route to a 43-28 victory. The Pope Greyhounds wrestling team won the Region 5-AAAA Duals Tournament Saturday afternoon by defeating Alexander High School. Kell won the consolation (3rd Place) match by defeating Sprayberry High School.
Pope reaches the finals with a win over East Paulding; Alexander defeats Sprayberry for a spot in the finals.
The Pope wrestling team defeated East Paulding to reach the finals, as befitting its No. 1 seed in the Region 5-AAAA Duals Tournament. Pope will face Alexander in the finals. Alexander earned its spot by beating Sprayberry.
The Cougars advance to the semi-finals with an easy victory.
Alexander began defense of their 2010 region duals championship as they took on Kell Friday at Pope High School. The Cougars entered the tournament with the No. 2 seed and a first round bye. After watching Kell easily defeat Lithia Springs, Alexander came out with pin fall victories in four of the first five individual match ups. The Cougars dominated the match winning nine of the 14 individuals and sending the Longhorns to the consolation bracket with a 43-30 win.
