An FPS with an interesting twist.
Some of you may be thinking, "what is The Darkness?" Well, by most standards the darkness is what you're plunged into when you turn the lights out. In terms of this critique, however, it's the name of a video game series available for the PC, Xbox 360 and the PS3 based on a comic book I've never read nor heard of before I picked up The Darkness II from Redbox. Before I begin this week's rant, let me make something clear: I didn't play the first game, mostly because I had heard almost nothing about it, and two, the little bit that I did hear about it was pretty negative. So just keep in mind that I'm examining this game from an everyman's perspective, not from that of a fan or even someone who's familiar with the series in any way. No, I…

Guns and explosions; business as usual.
Ooh, yay, another shooter! Can’t you see how excited I am? Because, you know, we don’t have enough of those out there, between Rage and Battlefield 3 and Gears of War 3 and Resistance 3 and the worst of them, Halo Anniversary, which only reaffirms that we as gamers will happily shell out another $60 for the same game twice. Now let’s welcome the next contender in the long, long line of shooting clones, Modern Warfare 3. This is probably one of the most hotly anticipated titles of 2011 and possibly the remainder of the decade. You can tell with that money-black-hole of a commercial that everyone went nuts over which featured two big-time Hollywood stars, a famous NBA star, and one of AC/DC’s greatest hits, the royalty payments of which …

Nathan Drake is as smooth as he's ever been.
So Release Season 2011 is in full swing, and we’re having quite a harvest this year. So far we've had Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3, as well as Goldeneye and Rage. Still to come we have Assassin’s Creed Revelations and Skyrim. I was planning to do Modern Warfare 3 this week, but I decided not to for two reasons: first, I just did a frantic, explody bullet-frenzy game last week, and two, there’s not a Redbox in the tri-state area that still has a copy. I could have done Goldeneye, but I deduced that it wouldn’t be much different from the other 50,000 shooters that have or will have been released by the end of this year. Some might think that last statement a bit hypocritical, though, because the game I did settle on for this week’s …

Dark Souls for the PS3 and 360 will unleash your inner fury...in a bad way.
I was really hoping I would be a bit more established before I was forced to do this to a game. But nay, says fate, it must be now, in my second review for Patch. So- let’s talk about a game called Dark Souls, shall we? Dark Souls is an Action RPG developed by From Software, a Japanese company which tries and fails to capture the spirit of a Western RPG. You know, ones with Wenches and burley, dirty barbarians and noble but equally-dirty-under-all -the-armor knights and all that jazz. We’ll get into the reasons it fails to do this later on. Plot and characters Know what? I have absolutely no idea. The cutscenes made no sense to me at all. I tried to follow along with what was going on, but I honestly had no idea what the narrator was …

Yes, I see now that I wrote $60 instead of $40. I apologize for that oversight. As far as my level of experience with Modern Warfare games, I've played them all, and I don't feel it's necessary for me to be a fan of the series in order to make remarks about it.   more ›
