The three-day state meet concluded Saturday in Albany.
Athletes in 10 events who represented Douglas, Cobb and Paulding schools brought back first-place medals from the Georgia High School Association girls state track and field championships in Albany. Two teams also peformed well in the event, which ran from Thursday through Saturday, as Kell High School finished second in the Class 5A meet and Marietta came in third in Class 6A. Kell's Kendell Williams closed out her illustrious career with three titles, winning the 5A high jump, long jump and 100-meter hurdles. She earned 11 crowns in her high school career, and on Friday broke her own state record in the long jump. That was kind of it.” That, according to an Associated Press report, was how Toronto Blue Jays pitcher J.A. Happ described the line drive that hit him in the head during his team’s May 7 game against Tampa Bay. The impact left him with a skull fracture and a knee that was tweaked as he fell to the ground. Happ’s injury has brought attention to other pitchers who have sustained similar injuries in the past. Major league pitcher Bryce Florie was struck in the right eye by a line drive more than a decade ago. Girls and boys teams resume action with second-round games.
In Class 4A, the Alexander girls play at Marist, and in Class 3A, Chapel Hill is at home to Peach County Tuesday when the Georgia High School Association state tournaments swing back into action with second-round games. The Lady Hoyas and Lady Raiders are among 12 girls teams from Cobb, Paulding and Douglas that won last week. Walton and Harrison will be playing host to South Forsyth and East Coweta, respectively, in the Class 6A tournament. The boys soccer tournament resumes on Wednesday, with nine Cobb, Paulding and Douglas teams having advanced. Hillgrove and Chapel Hill earned team runner-up honors and five athletes earned state titles in individual events.
Chapel Hill in Douglas County finished second in the Class AAA team standings with 47.33 points, a distant second to champion St. Pius X, which rolled up 85 points. North Paulding came in fifth in the Class AAAAAA meet with 26 points. Four Cobb County schools finished in the Top 10 in the Class AAAAAA field of the Georgia High School Association boys track and field meet, and five individual athletes earned state titles as the event concluded Saturday in Jefferson. Rain and winds didn't dash the completion of the three-day-long event as athletes from Cobb, Douglas and Paulding turned in strong showings. A high school’s chance to compete in the state championships was halted last month despite a winning performance from four of its athletes. Columbus High School saw four of its athletes take first in the 4 x 100-meter relay. But the team was disqualified, according to KHOU 11 News, after its final runner, Derrick Hayes, pointed up to the sky as he crossed the finish line. The DQ was levied as the gesture violated a rule that prohibits excessive acts of celebration, and it cost the school an opportunity to make it to the state championships. The NCAA’s recent “Bulletin on Field Markings, Uniforms, etc.” expressly prohibits “social media designations such as URL’s and hashtags” (Hashtags are words or phrases that are preceded by the # symbol that can be used online to group messages together or to rally support for a common cause, such as for a favorite team.). The rule means that while you may see your fellow fans using Twitter and other social media platforms while at the game, you won’t see “#SicemDawgs” between the hedges at Sanford Stadium or “#GaTech” on Historic Grant Field in Bobby Dodd Stadium. The pro basketball veteran has been a member of six teams in 12 seasons in the league, including three in Atlanta—he last donned a Hawks jersey during the 2011-2012 season.
