The Douglas County School System fared better than the state.
More than 72 percent of Douglas County high school students graduate within four years, according to new figures the Georiga Department of Education released on Tuesday. That's more than two percentage points higher than the state's 2012 graduation rate of 69.72 percent. Alexander High School led the district with a graduation rate of 81.28 percent. Douglas County high schools will hold graduation ceremonies on May 31 and June 1. Dates and times are as follows: Alexander High School: May 31 at 7 p.m., at the University of West Gerogia Chapel Hill High School: June 1 at 6 p.m., at the University of West Georgia Douglas County High School: June 1 at 9 a.m., at the University of West Georgia Lithia Springs High School: June 1 at 1 p.m., at the University of West Georgia New Manchester High School: May 31 at 8 p.m., on the New Manchester football field.

A church known for protesting at soldiers’ funerals held Saturday a demonstration to praise a tornado that caused devastation in a college town. Tell us if you think the church is deserving of its media attention or the efforts of counter-protesters.
Wherever this church goes, controversy and attention seem to follow. The Westboro Baptist Church has long been known for picketing the funerals of American soldiers as members believe those men and women died because of homosexuality “and other sins of America,” according to one of their latest press releases. One of the latest protests put on by members of the Topeka, Kansas-based church occurred Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the University of Alabama campus. Yeager Middle School was the top middle school, adding to the community effort to gather more than 1,400 Pounds in Change Collected for the Douglas County Pennies for Police Dogs Drive.
Children and adults around the county emptied out their penny cans and secret change stashes for a good cause, contributing more than 1,400 pounds of change to Pennies for Police Dogs charity Drive. This is the fourth year for the Pennies for Police Dogs Drive, where area schools compete to see who can raise the most money to help fight canine cancer. More than $4,200 was raised in this year. The top three elementary and the top middle school received visits from local K-9 units as well as K-9 demonstrations and touch-a-truck opportunities. The three-day state meet concluded Saturday in Albany.
Athletes in 10 events who represented Douglas, Cobb and Paulding schools brought back first-place medals from the Georgia High School Association girls state track and field championships in Albany. Two teams also peformed well in the event, which ran from Thursday through Saturday, as Kell High School finished second in the Class 5A meet and Marietta came in third in Class 6A. Kell's Kendell Williams closed out her illustrious career with three titles, winning the 5A high jump, long jump and 100-meter hurdles. She earned 11 crowns in her high school career, and on Friday broke her own state record in the long jump. Girls and boys teams resume action with second-round games.
In Class 4A, the Alexander girls play at Marist, and in Class 3A, Chapel Hill is at home to Peach County Tuesday when the Georgia High School Association state tournaments swing back into action with second-round games. The Lady Hoyas and Lady Raiders are among 12 girls teams from Cobb, Paulding and Douglas that won last week. Walton and Harrison will be playing host to South Forsyth and East Coweta, respectively, in the Class 6A tournament. The boys soccer tournament resumes on Wednesday, with nine Cobb, Paulding and Douglas teams having advanced.
