Wherever this church goes, controversy and attention seem to follow. The Westboro Baptist Church has long been known for picketing the funerals of American soldiers as members believe those men and women died because of homosexuality “and other sins of America,” according to one of their latest press releases. One of the latest protests put on by members of the Topeka, Kansas-based church occurred Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on the University of Alabama campus. Yeager Middle School was the top middle school, adding to the community effort to gather more than 1,400 Pounds in Change Collected for the Douglas County Pennies for Police Dogs Drive.
Children and adults around the county emptied out their penny cans and secret change stashes for a good cause, contributing more than 1,400 pounds of change to Pennies for Police Dogs charity Drive. This is the fourth year for the Pennies for Police Dogs Drive, where area schools compete to see who can raise the most money to help fight canine cancer. More than $4,200 was raised in this year. The top three elementary and the top middle school received visits from local K-9 units as well as K-9 demonstrations and touch-a-truck opportunities. The three-day state meet concluded Saturday in Albany.
Athletes in 10 events who represented Douglas, Cobb and Paulding schools brought back first-place medals from the Georgia High School Association girls state track and field championships in Albany. Two teams also peformed well in the event, which ran from Thursday through Saturday, as Kell High School finished second in the Class 5A meet and Marietta came in third in Class 6A. Kell's Kendell Williams closed out her illustrious career with three titles, winning the 5A high jump, long jump and 100-meter hurdles. She earned 11 crowns in her high school career, and on Friday broke her own state record in the long jump. Girls and boys teams resume action with second-round games.
In Class 4A, the Alexander girls play at Marist, and in Class 3A, Chapel Hill is at home to Peach County Tuesday when the Georgia High School Association state tournaments swing back into action with second-round games. The Lady Hoyas and Lady Raiders are among 12 girls teams from Cobb, Paulding and Douglas that won last week. Walton and Harrison will be playing host to South Forsyth and East Coweta, respectively, in the Class 6A tournament. The boys soccer tournament resumes on Wednesday, with nine Cobb, Paulding and Douglas teams having advanced. A high school’s chance to compete in the state championships was halted last month despite a winning performance from four of its athletes. Columbus High School saw four of its athletes take first in the 4 x 100-meter relay. But the team was disqualified, according to KHOU 11 News, after its final runner, Derrick Hayes, pointed up to the sky as he crossed the finish line. The DQ was levied as the gesture violated a rule that prohibits excessive acts of celebration, and it cost the school an opportunity to make it to the state championships. The Kiwanis Club of Douglas County is holding their annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, May 4. All proceeds benefit A Gift of Love. A Gift of Love partners with the school system to send backpacks with food every Friday to 365 children. In addition, 1000 children and their families are sponsored during the holidays. A Gift of Love provides backpacks of school supplies during a Back to School event as well. Tickets for all the pancakes and bacon you can eat can be purchased at the door for $5. The breakfast will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. at A Gift of Love, located at 3870 Longview DriveDouglasville, GA 30135.
