Army Vet Edward Gilmer Nuckoles, 58, Dies

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 25, at 1 p.m. from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel with Pastor Larry Massey officiating.

Edward Gilmer Nuckoles, 58 of Carrollton, passed away Monday, May 20. He was born Jan. 27, 1955 in Staunton, VA., to Oliver Clay and Bessie Marie Strickler Nuckoles. He was a 1974 graduate of Buffalo Gap High School and worked for more than 20 years for the Shenandoah Corporation. Ed proudly served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Life on the Word Church in Carrollton. “Life is Great”, was his motto and Ed showed it by enjoying life to the fullest. He never met a stranger. He was an involved and loving father having devoted his time to coaching the girl’s Blue Ridge Softball team, the local youth bowling league and serving the Riverheads High School band booters for years as a member and president. Mary M. Edmonds, 57 of Bremen, passed away, Monday, May 20. She was born June 4, 1955 in Chicago, IL., to the late Clarence Gilbert Rogers and Madeline Fischer Rogers. She was a loving wife, mother, and homemaker and was a member of the Clearview Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Clarence Gilbert Rogers and Madeline Fischer Rogers, she was also preceded in death by her daughters: Mary Helen Tucker and Tammy Rose Edmonds; brothers: David Rogers and Jeff Rogers. Douglas Eugene Strickland, 49, Dies

Funeral services were held Friday in the chapel of Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Hunt officiating.

Douglas Eugene Strickland, 49 of Dallas, passed away May 12. He was an aircraft painter for Lockheed for 28 years. Mr. Strickland loved his family, but he also loved old cars and Harley’s. He is preceded in death by his parents, Hoyt and Beatrice Strickland; a sister, Janice Evans. He is survived by his children, Joshua Strickland, Alicia Sawyer; brother, Jimmy Strickland; sister, Sandra Fowler; grandsons, Michael and Garrett. Funeral services were held Friday in the chapel of Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Hunt officiating. Interment followed in Rolling Hills Memory Gardens in Acworth. Jeff Burdette, 67 of Carrollton, passed away Monday, May 13, at Tanner Medical Center. He was born Nov. 01, 1945 in Atlanta, to Ernestine Giles Burdette and the late Lenwood Burdette. He retired from Southwire as a logistics manager after forty-two years of service. He graduated from Southern Tech with an associate’s degree in Industrial Management and Industrial Engineering and proudly served in the Army National Guard. He enjoyed restoring old cars, wood working, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. Besides his father, preceding him in death is his brother, Wayne Burdette. WWII Hero William Hubert Smith, 88, Dies

William Hubert Smith, 88 of Carrollton, passed away Saturday, May 18, at his residence. He was born December 09, 1924 in Haleyville, AL., to Mr. and Mrs. Monroe and Mammie Smith. He retired from Georgia Power after more than thirty years of service. Mr. Smith served his country as a member of the U.S Army during WWII where he received the Purple Heart Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his service as a medic. He was a faithful member of Shiloh Methodist Church and a member of the Bowdon Masonic Lodge #206 F. & A. M. Richard Laverne Pike, 80 of Whitesburg,  formerly of Douglasville passed away Thursday, May 16. He was born Feb. 10, 1933 in Atlanta, Georgia the son of the late John William Pike and the late Carrie Dee Fiquette Pike. He married Lelan Lareice Phillips on July 5, 1956 in Grove Park, GA. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired from AllState Insurance having worked as a Quality Control Representative. Mr. Pike was very crafty and enjoyed woodworking. Edward Eugene “Gene” Arnold, 77 of Douglasville, passed away, Sunday, May 5. He was born Aug. 15, 1935 in Atlanta, to the late Paul Eugene Arnold and Mary McLendon Arnold. Bill Allen, 77 of Atlanta, passed away Sunday, May 5.
