The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County is pleased to showcase blues, jazz and rhythm and blues performed by Frankie’s Blues Mission tonight on O'Neal Plaza. The performance begins at 7 p.m. This special outdoor event is free and open to the general public. Listeners are reminded to bring their own chairs. Frankie’s Blues Mission will perform its unique blend of blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and zydeco. Long a fixture on Atlanta’s blues scene, the Blues Mission now includes singer-guitarist Frank “Frankie Lee” Robinson, bassist Kermit Maxwell, and drummer Alfonso Largo has been together four years. Olga Florence Sirota, 84 of Douglasville, passed away Thursday, May 23. She was born Sept. 17, 1928 in New York. Mrs. Sirota loved sewing, sailing, tennis and ballroom dancing. She was Lutheran by faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin J. Sirota and great-grandson, Collin Huggins. She is survived by her sons, Edmond John Schlitz, Frank Schlitz and wife Lynda; daughter, Lois Ann Gibson and husband Roy; grandchildren, Jeromy Fenton, Jessica Rosser and husband Ben, Lisa Crook and husband Wayne, Kenny Huggins; great-grandchildren, Cody Crook, Kelsey Crook, Joshua Huggins, Cash Huggins, Connor Kruzich, Kerri Rosser, Isabella Spampinado; beloved pet Cassie; other family and friends. The City of Douglasville will hold its annual Summer Sampler on May 31 at the Le Jardin Blanc. The Summer Sampler is a fundraising event presented by the Douglasville Downtown Development Authority. Tickets entitle each guest to a Summer Sampler souvenir glass, light hors d’oeuvres, live music and sample wine and food tasting. Douglasville City Manager Bill Osborne's wife, Jane Sherwood Osborne died Thursday. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the West Metro Church of God.
Jane Sherwood Osborne of Douglasville passed away Thursday, May 23. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the West Metro Church of God. Interment services will be at Lawnwood Memorial Park in Covington at 3 p.m. May 28. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Monday, May 27 from 3 to 8 p.m. Jane Osborne, 81, was a pioneer in home health care in Georgia. Her husband Bill is City Manager in Douglasville. Jane and Bill have five sons, five daughters in law, eleven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Ms. Osborne was an R.N., having graduated from the Crawford W. Long School of Nursing in 1950. Over the next 50 years, she served as a nurse in hospitals in the Atlanta area and Jacksonville, Florida; …

The University of West Georgia Alumni Association has announced the first top 30 Under 30 list for 2013. The nomination process for the 2013 list was completed on March 15, 2013. Of the 30 alumni listed, three are currently working in Douglasville or Villa Rica and two more are originally from the area. Beth Walsh, a 2011 UWG graduate and Douglasville, resident, is currently an account executive for the Atlanta Dream. Walsh graduated in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management. David Collings and Kyle Newton, both residents of Villa Rica, are also on the list. Collings is the owner and lead instructor of 5-Tool Sports Training Center. The City of Douglasville will be lighting up O'Neal Plaza while showing the movie 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days' on Friday, June 7. The free, family-friendly event will feature pre-show entertainment and popcorn. Movie-goers are encouraged to grab a bite to eat downtown or bring their dinner to the plaza while watching the movie.
