WGTC Splits at Southern Union

The West Georgia Technical College women win thriller, 46-45; men fall 76-52.

West Georgia Tech split road contests with Southern Union State Community College, an NJCAA Division I member, in Wadley, Ala. on Tuesday night, with the women earning a thrilling 46-45 victory while the men lost 76-52.

In the women’s game, Kenny Edwards’ squad held on with two big defensive stops in the final possessions of the game to pick up the first win of the season for the Golden Knights.

West Georgia Tech improved to 1-2 on the year while Southern Union fell to 0-3.

West Georgia Tech forced more than 20 turnovers for the third consecutive game to open the year.

Dominique Washington led WGTC with nine points and four rebounds. Kelsey Walthall and Kadriana Howard added eight points apiece.

WGTC overcame a 28-18 halftime deficit, outscoring SUCC 28-17 in the second half.

“We played an ugly game but we finished down the stretch to pull it out,” Edwards said. “We were in a similar situation against South Georgia Tech last weekend and lost the game, so I was happy to see us do the things we needed to do to win a close, tight game at the end. I liked the way that we responded by picking up the intensity in the second half.”

West Georgia Tech fell behind early in the men’s game and trailed 33-16 at halftime. The Golden Knights shot just 34.5 percent from the field and could not buy a bucket from beyond the three-point line (0-of-9).

Orlandis Hill led the Golden Knights is scoring for a second-straight game, with 9 points (4-of-12 from the field). Devante Orebeau, Jalen Bracey and Shaquille Davis all contributed seven points for WGTC.

West Georgia Tech fell to 0-2 on the year. SUCC is now 1-0.

Both squads will be back in action this Friday night as they welcome NJCAA Division I-member Chattahoochee Tech in their respective home openers.

The women’s game will tip at 6 p.m., with the men to follow at 8 p.m.

Friday’s contests will be played at Oak Mountain Academy in Carrollton.

WGTC was scheduled to play a men’s game against the Martinique National Team today (Wednesday) but that game was cancelled late Tuesday.
