New Manchester Makes State Playoffs

The Jaguar boys join the Douglas County boys and girls and the Chapel Hill girls in the AAAA basketball tournament.

New Manchester in its first year of existence has earned its first berth in the Georgia High School Association state boys basketball tournament.

The Jaguars finished fourth in the Region 5-AAAA tournament, losing to Lithia Springs in the semifinals and to Osborne in the third-place game, the Douglas County Sentinel reported.

But earlier wins over Pope and Alexander were good enough for a spot in the state AAAA playoffs.

Also making it to the AAAA boys tournament is Douglas County, which lost the 5-AAAA title game to Lithia Springs, 68-57, on Saturday, the Sentinel reported.

As the region’s No. 2 seed, the Tigers will host a first-round game Saturday against Chamblee, the third seed from 6-AAAA.

If the Tigers win, they’ll play either at Chattahoochee or at home against Salem the following Wednesday.

In the AAAA girls tournament, Chapel Hill is Region 5-AAAA’s fourth seed and will play at Region 6-AAAA champ Miller Grove. The game will be part of a doubleheader Friday with the Miller Grove-New Manchester boys game, according to iHigh.com.

Chapel Hill lost to Douglas County in the 5-AAAA third-place game, the Douglas County Sentinel said.

If the Lady Panthers pull off the upset, they’ll play next Tuesday at Salem or Forsyth Central.

The Douglas County girls will open the state tournament Friday at Chamblee, Region 6-AAAA’s second seed.

A win would earn the Lady Tigers a home game against Lambert or a road game against Habersham Central.
