Students Get Real Life Lessons on Shadow Day

In what class can you learn both how to interrogate a prisoner and how to design a new bathroom for the house you're building?

Well, it's not exactly a class but more than one hundred students spread out all over Douglas County Tuesday, participating in the hands-on learning experience known as Shadow Day.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department hosted students interested in law enforcement, while local architect Terry Miller gave students hands-on training in planning and building. More than 25 local businesses invited students into their places of work to give them an interactive perspective on how life will be in a career field that interests them.

"The purpose is to give students real life work experience through by taking one-day to shadow a local business or person in a field that interests them," Karen Stroud said, director of communications for the Douglas County School System.

In its 17th year, Shadow Day is part of the Partners in Education program and five years ago also became part of the County's BRIDGES program.
