In order to advance to the Finalist level, students must present a record of high academic performance throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, write an essay and earn high SAT scores. About 80 percent of Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing and more than half of the Finalists will win an Achievement Scholarship award. The student must also show active participation in school and community activities, demonstrate leadership abilities, as well as educational goals.

The NMSC conducts this privately financed academic competition without government assistance. Initiated in 1964, more than 31,000 students have received Acheivement Scholarship awards, worth more than $98 million.
