Worthan Defeats Rainwater; Runoffs in House District 62, 66 Races

Tom Worthan has earned the Douglas County GOP Commission Chairman nomination after Tuesday night's election, while Georgia House District 62 and 66 seats are headed for runoffs on Aug. 21.

Incumbent Chairman and GOP representative Tom Worthan will face Democrat Romona J. Jones in the Nov. 6 election after defeating Rita Rainwater by more than 5,000 votes in Tuesday night's election.

Worthan earned 8,797 votes, 70.13 percent; while former Douglas County Commission Chairman Rita Rainwater earned 3,747 votes, 29.87 percent.

There will be runoffs in both the Georgia House District 62 and 66 races, held on Aug. 21.

In the House District 62 race, Marvin Arrington will be facing LaDawn Blackett Jones because neither earned 50 percent plus one vote. Arrington finished with 3,114 votes, 47.66 percent; while Jones earned 1,860 votes, or 28.47 percent of the vote. Benny Crane had 1,216 votes, 18.61 percent and Kip Carr 344 votes or 5.26 percent.

In the House District 66 race, Bob Snelling will face off in a runoff against Mike Miller. Snelling earned 2,533 votes, 49.63 percent; while Miller had 1,387 votes, 27.17 percent. Former Douglasville Mayor Mickey Thompson earned 1,184 votes, or 23.20 percent.

The County Commissioner for District 2 will be Kelly Robinson, with 1,351 votes (66.32 percent) after he defeated Freddie Ashmon, 686 votes (33.68 percent). With no Republican challengers to face in November, Robinson has earned a second term.

Incumbent Donzella James will not need a runoff for the State Senate District 35 seat, having earned 10,133 votes, or 74.70 percent. Detrius Hill Jones had 1,642 votes, 12.10 percent, and Cory J. Lynch had 1,790 votes, 13.20 percent.
