Voting at Old Courthouse Steady, Strong

City of Douglasville voting began at 7 a.m. and, so far, has been strong and steady at one of Douglasville's downtown polling precincts, in the Old Courthouse Museum building.

City Clerk Joyce Stone said the turnout is usually around 2,000 voters for this type of election.

Voting will continue until 7 p.m. for the election and the ESPLOST.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, 768 votes had been cast in-person for the Douglas County ESPLOST IV. Forty ballots were mailed out and 28 were received.

The one-cent sales tax would be used to pay a portion of the principal and interest due on outstanding bonds from 2005, 2007 and 2010. The school system expects to raise $122 million, which school officials hope will enable the local bond millage rate to be reduced to reduce property tax obligations.

Money could also be used for technology upgrades, textbooks, building renovations and band instruments.

In the City of Douglasville election, 409 people have voted in person. Thirty one ballots were mailed out and 18 have been received. Mail-in ballots can be received until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Four candidates are running for mayor: , , and Ron Wilson.

In an unscientific mayoral poll Douglasville Patch has been conducting since Friday, and is currently running, 311 votes have been cast, with Councilman Terry Miller leading. Miller currently has 162 votes, 52 percent; Harvey Persons currently has 112 votes, 36 percent; Rochelle Robinson has 25 votes, eight percent Ron Wilson has 12 votes for three percent.
