Mims Running for Mayor

New mayoral candidate cites a balanced budget as biggest issue.

City Councilman Roy E. Mims announced this week that he will run for mayor in November.

Mims, 42, who represents Ward 5 Post 1, joins former councilwoman Rochelle Robinson in the race to replace longtime Mayor Mickey Thompson who announced in January that he wouldn’t run again.

First elected in 2003, Mims said the main issue he sees facing the council in the next few years is keeping a balanced budget.  With revenues down due to the economy, it is increasingly difficult, he said.

“It’s tough,” Mims said. “You have to weigh what you need and what you want.”

Mims, who works for Canadian hardware company, Richelieu, in Norcross, chairs the city’s finance, parks and recreation and planning and zoning committees.

The Georgia Southern grad said those are the three most important committees within the city government. He plans to base his campaign on his experience.

“I’ve been in the game seven years,” he said, “and that’s big.”

Robinson and Mims are the only two who have announced their intentions, but the actual qualifying for the mayor’s race isn’t until August, according to the city’s elections office.

A native of Fitzgerald, Mims moved to Douglasville in 1995. He and his wife, Staci, live in Saddlebrook with their two children, Jake 12, and Elizabeth, 7.
