Meet 1 Ward 5, Post 2 Candidate

Doug Lequire and Gene Butler are running for the Douglasville City Council seat being vacated by Terry Miller, who is running for mayor.

Doug Lequire and Gene Butler are both running for the seat being vacated by Terry Miller, who is running for mayor.

Lequire has past experience in Douglasville politics, having served on the City Council from 1999 to 2003.

"I am seeking the elected position to represent the people of Ward 5," he said. "I am retired and not encumbered with a full time job nor do l have any family members involved in anything that could be viewed as a conflict of interest. I have been honored to serve this country in some capacity most of my adult life.

"I feel my training and experiences as a leader can be put to use as the city faces many problems as our economy slows down and the revenues decline. The City has an opportunity with the new, incoming leaders to develop a team that is truly interested in the welfare of the City and not a stepping stone for political advancement. It is more critical than ever to work close with the county to maximize our resources."

Lequire, a retired U.S. Army officer, said he has remained active in the community since his retirement. He's a member of the and said he raises money for charities like cancer research, heart funds, veterans with disabilities.

"I have been the treasurer for the Chapel Hills Home Owners Association for the past four years and, with the help of board members, have managed to double our reserves while revitalizing and updating many of our facilities. This is the type of team work that is essential to the financial health and welfare of the City of Douglasville."

Lequire said he grew up in the south Georgia area. He attended Baylor University and holds a BS and a Masters degree in human resources.

The general election will be held on Nov. 8 and voter registration ends on Oct. 11. Early voting will be held from on Oct. 18 to Oct. 28. Advanced voting will be held from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4 at the Douglas County Courthouse.
