Douglasville's the Star on My Citi

It's the fourth anniversary this spring of Citi TV in Douglasville, the city government cable channel on Comcast Cable.

It’s the fourth anniversary this spring of Citi TV in Douglasville, the city government cable channel on Comcast Cable.  Kellie Hunter has been there from the start as communications director. Mayor Mickey Thompson got the ball rolling by exercising the city’s franchise right in 2006.

The channel uses a small studio just off the council chambers when they’re not on location, Hunter says.  A production staff of three is all she has to work with, “but it’s amazing the amount of work we can do,” she adds.

How many programs do they air? “We have seven programs that run on pretty much a monthly basis, in addition to carrying the city council meetings,” Hunter explains.  Hunter and chief producer Jason Post believe their focus on the city sets them apart from commercial stations.

“We’ve got a lot going on here–that people just don’t know about,” Post adds. He hopes Citi TV can make those city events that much bigger when they happen.
Producer Steve Jones says he’s most proud of their on-location programs, such as their high school football coverage and City Connector, shot at Arbor Place Mall. “We’ve been doing that going on two years now.  It’s a show we do in front of a live audience, so you have the buzz of that. We’ve got a lot of really good information every month.”

Producer Nathan Todd is proud of the way they can respond on the fly. “If we run into something, we’re not going to let it stop us. There’s a lot of times where, especially doing on location stuff, you run into something that you didn’t plan for, and if you can’t think on your feet and be done with it right there, you’re done for the day and there’s nothing you can do to fix it.”
Hunter says they’re always open for ideas for programs, and they have a new “Dotcom” show coming up within the month that includes programming and involvement with local colleges.
