Douglas County is pleased to welcome Steven W. Sheffield as its Traffic Operations Division Manager and Assistant Department of Transportation Director.
Mr. Sheffield has 20 years of experience in the transportation field, including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) which Douglas County recently implemented. Mr. Sheffield is in responsible charge of the County’s system that monitors signals and corresponding traffic patterns throughout the County. ITS is a fairly recent application that integrates live data and feedback from numerous sources to help manage traffic and provide information to drivers. ITS utilizes variable message signs, CCTV systems, weather information, and traffic sensors among many other tools to improve traffic conditions.
Most recently, Mr. Sheffield was Clayton County’s Civil Engineering Lead, Traffic Control Center, for their Transportation and Development Division. His prior experience includes the Georgia State Road and Tollway Authority where he worked with the I-85 Express Lanes, the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank, Georgia 400 Corridor, among other projects. He previously served as Project Manager for private consulting engineering firms and oversaw the financial and technical performance of traffic and ITS projects for Georgia clients including Gwinnett County, the City of Alpharetta, the Georgia Department of Transportation, Clayton County, the City of Roswell, and State and local agencies throughout the Nation.
Mr. Sheffield holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Urban Systems Engineering from George Mason University, and a Masters of Fine Arts in Historic Preservation from The Savannah College of Art and Design. He is a member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers.
He is married to Katherine who works with the Georgia Conservancy, and they have a 21-month old son, McGregor, with a second child due this Summer.
