County to Celebrate Vietnam Veterans Day

Douglas County will pause at noon on Thursday, March 28, to celebrate and recognize the service and sacrifice of its citizens who served in the Vietnam War. The Vietnam Veterans Day program will occur on the 40th anniversary - shy one day - of March 29, 1973, the day when the last American troops left Vietnam. The program’s purpose is to reaffirm one of our fundamental obligations - to show respect and dignity to all who have worn the uniform of the United States.

The 30-minute outdoor program will be held in the Court of Honor of the Douglas County Courthouse which includes the flag court and the Eternal Flame. Music will be provided by the Lithia Springs High School Chorus under the direction of Lauren Harper, and the Lithia Springs High School Band under the direction of DJ McConnell. Colors will be presented by the Chapel Hill High School Navy JROTC Color Guard under the direction of Captain Ted McMurtrie.  Douglas County Commission Chairman Tom Worthan will narrate the program with assistance from Rev. Scott Hughes, Assistant Pastor of Douglasville’s First United Methodist Church.

The program is open to the public with free admission, and limited seating will be available.

At the conclusion of the program, attendees will be invited to tie yellow ribbons on to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Dogwood Tree on the grounds of the Courthouse.

The Vietnam Veterans Day observance is a program of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners through its Department of Communications and Community Relations.  The program will be filmed for later broadcast on dctv23, the Douglas County government access cable television channel.
