City Council Mulls Corridor Study

In addition to the Highway 92 study, the council will consider operational changes at West Pines Golf Club.

Douglasville City Council held its legislative work session Thursday evening, and will meet Monday night to vote on some or all of the agenda items.

Planning and Zoning Committee, chaired by Councilman Roy Mims

  • Adopt a resolution directing the city manager to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) from consulting firms for preparation of a corridor study for Georgia Highway 92 (Fairburn Road) from I-20 northward to the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks.

“What we’re looking at is a plan that would allow us to direct the growth for Georgia Hwy. 92; it’s going through a major redevelopment right now . . . and when that happens, we want to make sure that we don’t just let development happen--we’re actually guiding development and understand where it’s going to go,” explained Jeff Noles, director of development services for the city.

Finance Committee, chaired by Roy Mims.

  • Consider possible changes in the operation of the City of Douglasville’s . Two citizens commented on this item. Following the work session the council reconvened in executive session to discuss options available to the city with regard to possible changes in the current operation of the West Pines Golf Club. Mims, or other members of the council, did not elaborate on what options the city was willing to consider, or if any of those options would reach the voting stage on Monday. 

Public Safety Committee, chaired by Councilman Dennis McLain.

  • One request for a change in agent outlet manager for sales of on-premises alcohol for Blazin’ Wings, Inc. D/B/A on Douglas Blvd.

Community and Economic Development Committee, chaired by Mayor Pro Tem John Schildroth

  • Authorize the Mayor to sign the grant application to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) from Travelers Aid of Metropolitan Atlanta, Inc. dba HOPE Atlanta for funds [for] emergency shelter and transitional housing for the period of July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012, verifying the City of Douglasville’s approval of said grant request and the organization’s location within the city.
  • Adopt a resolution concerning several Wednesday night events and special concerts to be held in the downtown area this summer and fall. This item pertained to the city’s event known as “Wednesday Night Wind Down.”

Information Tech, Maintenance and Sanitation and Education and Training Committees had no agenda items on the work session agenda. Neither did the Parks and Recreation, Transportation, Personnel and Organization or Ordinances and Intergovernmental committees.

Following the council's agenda, two citizens addressed the council with comments concerning an issue with signage regulations and there were no additional comments from delegates prior to adjournment.
