BOC to Approve Meal Program Funds

A decrease in the funding amount shouldn't affect the number of people serviced, county officials said.

A slight cut in funding for the Home-Delivered Meals program shouldn’t affect the operation of the program, Douglas County officials said.

is expected to vote on an agreement with the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta for 2011-2012 to provide $28,135 in funding for the program. Senior Services Director Richard Hagan said the county saw a little less than a 10 percent cut in funding for the program, which amounts to approximately $2,800.

“I think the climate out there for donor contributions is a little low,” Hagan said.

While the county is seeing a reduction in funding, Hagan said it is so low that he doesn’t expect it to affect the number of meals or people served.

The BOC also is expected to vote to authorize the parks and recreation department to apply for a trail grant from the Department of Natural Resources. Parks and Recreation Department Director Gary Dukes told the BOC during its work session on Monday, if the county receives the grant, the majority of the money would be used to build new restroom facilities at the .

“We get a lot of use out there,” Dukes said.

After the restrooms are built, Duke said the remainder of the funds will be used to construct a new trail head and for beautification at the site. The grant requires a 20 percent match, which Dukes said can be through in-kind services.

In other business, the BOC is expected at its legislative meeting on Tuesday to grant an easement to the Douglasville-Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority for access at the Dog River Library. County officials said the water meter was sitting on right-of-way but that they weren’t alerted to the issue before now. The 18x28 easement is in line with the construction roadway. The county has received a certificate of occupancy for the 5,800-square foot building on Highway 5 about one mile south of Dog River, which . The library sits on 900 acres of forest land owned by Douglas County.

The BOC’s legislative meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Citizen’s Hall at the Douglas County Courthouse.
