Assessment Notices to be Mailed on June 14

The deadline in Douglas County to file an appeal will be Monday, July 29 at 5 p.m.

The Douglas County Board of Assessors will mail out Assessment Notices to every owner of taxable real and personal property in the County, on Friday, June 14. They will mail out approximately 53,000 notices to owners of real estate (residential houses, residential land, commercial/industrial buildings, and commercial/industrial land). The Board of Assessors will also mail out approximately 3,100 notices to owners of personal property (business inventory, business furnishings and equipment, boats, and airplanes).

The purpose of the Assessment Notice is to inform owners of the value which will be placed on their property and from which their 2013 property tax bill will be calculated. The Notice gives an estimate of what the tax bill might be if the millage rates from last year remain the same. The Assessment Notice also gives property owners detailed instructions about how to file an appeal if they disagree with the valuation. The deadline to file an appeal will be Monday, July 29 at 5 p.m. The written appeal must be in the Douglas County Appraisal Department Office by that deadline.

If mailed, the appeal (must be postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service no later than July 29. Property owners may simply write a letter of appeal; use the appeal forms provided online at www.douglascounty.com on the Appraisal Department page; or use the appeal forms provided at the Appraisal Department Office on the first floor of the Douglas County Courthouse. Appeals by fax, email, or telephone are not accepted.
