New comer Jay Mark Smith has qualified to run for the Ward 1 seat, against Mayor Pro Tem Larry Yockey.
In addition to Ward 1, council seats up for election are Ward 2 (Post 1) and Ward 3 (posts 1 and 2).
Local attorney and former school board member Mike Miller has qualified to run against Council member Dennis McLain for the Ward 2, Post 1 seat.
Councilwoman LaShun Burr Danley (Ward 3, Post 1) and Councilman Samuel Davis (Ward 3, Post 2) have also qualified to be on the ballot.
Qualifying continues through 4:30 p.m. today.
To qualify, candidates pay $180 and submit a candidacy affidavit. Candidates must also be 21-years-old, live within the city limits for at least 12 months prior to the date of election and reside in the ward for which they're running. They must also be registered and qualified voters.
