UPDATE: Mableton Teen Allegedly Starved by Mother Was Mentally Challenged

Police arrested Ebony Berry, 38, of Mableton Friday after they found the body of her severely malnourished teenage daughter at their home on Concord Road.

The 16-year-old Mableton girl that was mentally challenged, reported the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Ebony Berry was arrested Friday and charged with murder and first-degree cruelty to children after Cobb police found the severely malnourished body of her daughter Markea Berry at her home in the 600 block of Concord Road just outside Smyrna city limits.

Friday was not the first time Cobb police had come to Markea’s aid. In 2010, the department issued a search for her after she wandered away from her home. At that time, the police told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that the then 14-year-old Markea functioned at a third grade level. She was found safe the next day at Walmart in Austell.

Ebony Berry is still being held in Cobb County jail without bond. Other children found in the home Friday have been placed with the Department of Family and Children Services.

I remember when the girl went missing. I was at the Shell Station on Floyd Road and the police were in the parking lot asking if anyone had seen her. I remember being so happy when they did find her. I'm not sure how long you have to go without food before you die, but this should not have happened. If you think your child has problems, you need to take them to a doctor or the hospital. No money is not a problem. A child will be looked after regardless. While I commend the mother for reporting her missing the first time, I fail to understand how this child could starve to death with other people in the house. I hope God is taking care of her now.

I don't understand how a person can hurt a child, there own mentally challenged child at that,i know she gets three meals a day where she is. Does that feel ok to me hell no!!! Let her see what it's like to be hungry, but the law want let us do that. How sad for such a young girl with challenges had to die at the hands of the one person in the world you are are to be safe with, what a monster!!! You deserve everything you get and some!!! Innocent till proven Guilty!!!! That little girl was innocent, this just makes me sick for any child to ever have to suffer!!!!

She just needed to be looked after a special needs child!!! I believe that's why they call a child a special needs child, that is because they are so special!!!!!
