Sheriff's Office: New Year's Day Most Active for Vehicle Thefts

If you drive an SUV and don't have a trunk, keep valuables hidden under a blanket.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office points out in a Face book post today that of all the holidays in 2012, New Year’s Day was the most active for vehicle thefts with 2,228 reported across the country.

The Sheriff's Office and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) reminds drivers to take extra care during the busy holiday shopping season. Aside from vehicle thefts, vehicle burglaries also increase in activity. Drivers should make sure they park in well-lit areas and keep packages in the trunk. Leave nothing visible in the interior, and, as always, ensure your vehicle is locked before leaving it.
