Phone Scam Targets Douglas Residents

The caller requests money to clear up outstanding warrants.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a telephone scam.

This is how the scam works: A caller who identifies himself as James Watson of the fictitious Georgia Police Department informs people about an outstanding warrant for someone they know. To clear up the situation, Watson instructs them to call another number and ask for George Blake. Blake tells them to send money before a certain date.

"If the money is sent," according to the warning on the Douglas County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, "the scam has been perpetrated and the victims have lost their money. ... There is no Georgia Police Department and no legitimate Law Enforcement Agency would make this type call."

If you have been the victim of this scam, call the Douglas County Sheriff's Office at 678-486-1253 or leave an anonymous tip at http://sheriff.douglas.ga.us/contactus.html.
