Gary Lee Malone, a 46-year-old man charged with murder, made his initial appearance in Douglas County Superior Court this afternoon, according to Andrew Agan, with the DA's Office. With family members and friends of the victim looking on from the gallery, Malone stood in an orange jump suit while District Attorney David McDade addressed the court.
“Mr. Malone stands before the court today, charged with murder in this particular case,” McDade said. “He is charged with causing [the victim’s] death by striking her multiple times with an object.”
Malone was denied bond by Judge David T. Emerson, who said the “defendant poses a risk for further criminal conduct.”
Malone has applied for a lawyer through the public defender’s office. When Judge Emerson asked what he did for a living, Malone replied that he is currently on disability.Malone is believed to have beaten his 36-year-old girlfriend Katrina West to death on Saturday during a fight over finances, according to the Douglas County Sentinel.
After the beating, Malone called 911 and waited for the police to arrive, the newspaper said. He was sitting on the porch of his Lithia Springs apartment when deputies took him into custody.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab took the body for autopsy.
